Reading, English, Grammar & Literature Learning
About
I have several years experience as a certified literacy tutor and homework helper. I also have TESL certification. (Teaching English as a Second Language. My special skills are in English coursework - covering reading, grammar, spelling, literature, along with writing guidelines for both term and research papers.
My goal is to make learning fun, and I use several techniques to help students reach their goals.
I enjoy the moment a student understands a certain concept or strategy I've taught them so they're better able to retain and use that new knowledge in their future educational endeavors.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I use a different process, depending on the age of the student. If I am working with K-8 graders, I would try to find out as much information as I could from the parents as far as where the student is grade wise, if an IEP has been done, the personality of the child -- shyness, their ability to concentrate for long periods of time, etc. When first working with the student, I usually like to start at a grade below their present grade to assess where I think they are - whether it's reading, spelling, writing skills.I also use this process for high school students, too.
If I am working with ESL adults, I will have a long conversation with them and try to assess where they are in their speaking, reading and writing skills, and from there, I will use a number of tools to better able them to grasp the concepts of what we are working on. What works best for me are flashcards and beginning reading books.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have gone through two separate literacy trainings over the years and received my certifications. I am also TESL certified. (Teaching English as a Second Language.)
I worked as a court reporter for 30 years where I was required to have a proficient level of expertise in English, vocabulary, grammar and spelling.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard fee is $15.00 an hour.
I also will do a sliding scale and pro bono work, as I believe if a student needs help, money should not be a hindrance to them.
How did you get started teaching?
When my children were young, I became the house the neighborhood kids came to for homework nights. We actually called it Habitat for Homework. From there I received training as a literacy volunteer, and have been active in that role for several years. Currently I volunteer at San Diego Refuge Tutoring.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked mostly with K-8, but have taught literacy to adults. Additionally, I have worked with several college students on writing and editing their research papers and helping them navigate through the standards necessary to create an accurate paper using the proper guidelines.
