Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
In an initial meeting, we discuss what the student has as his or her goals for our meeting times and for the coursework that is being undertaken. We talk about ways I can help and expectations for our sessions. I try to elicit information from their past coursework, attitudes toward mathematics, areas of confidence and areas where confidence is lacking where we can work together to strengthen academic foundations and confidence.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have 30 years of teaching high school math courses ranging from pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, precalculus, AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB, International Baccalaureate Math Studies, SL Math, and HL Math courses.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I ask $80 per hour/student with additional costs if there is significant distance of driving from my home and/or unusual preparations or materials demanded for the tutoring sessions. If meeting with a small group, I charge $50 per hour/student for 2 or 3 students at a time.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching directly out of university, always having had a desire to help young people discover their confidence and capabilities and to find direction and joyful anticipation for their futures.
What types of students have you worked with?
I actually have taught students from all over the world in 7 different English-language international schools in East Asia, South and Central America, Africa, the Middle East, and in the USA.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I actually love the outdoors and had the wonderful opportunity of backpacking 4 days on the Escalante River in Utah with 9th graders in my school. Carrying all our own gear, cooking camp meals and eating together, enduring mosquitoes and weariness, enjoying grandeur and beauty - it was a shared experience of pushing our perceptions of our own limits and building trust in community.
