Summit Humanities Tutoring
About
I am a recent graduate from Northwestern University. There, I got my major in Secondary Education with a concentration in History and a minor in Political Science. Many of my classes at college were about how to effectively teach middle to high school-aged students. As a part of my course work, I also taught AP US History and Civics to high schoolers in Chicago, IL.
After finishing university and obtaining my degree, I received my teaching credentials in Social Studies, with a concentration in History and Political Science. I then went on to teach English at a middle school in Oakland, CA. I was there for three months before the school, unfortunately, closed for logistical reasons.
I now tutor students in middle school and high school online on a variety of subjects including: SAT Reading and Writing; ACT Reading and Writing; AP English; AP US History; and World History. I also work as a part-time substitute English teacher for Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward, CA.
From a very young age, I have wanted to help educate others. My education in middle and high school gave me the chance to go to a great college and have many opportunities opened to me. However, I did not do it alone. I had the help of not only my classroom teachers and my family, but tutors who helped me with the SAT and difficult classes. I want to be able to give current students the same quality of education that allowed me to achieve my dreams.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When working with a new student, the most important thing to do is to get to know them. It is necessary to build a congenial relationship with any student if you want to be an effective educator. It is also important to understand the student's academic strengths and weaknesses. Whether in the classroom of 30 students or with a student one-on-one, instruction must be personalized to fit the needs of the student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have an educational background in teaching. I got my B.S. in Secondary Education with a concentration in History. My education not only centered around the theory of learning, but the real-world application of teaching, as well. During my college classes, I learned best practices for teaching and then got the chance to apply them during a student-teaching experience where I lead multiple classes for three months. My education culminated in my degree and a Professional Educator's License from Illinois.
During college, I also got some experience teaching elementary school students reading and writing at a local non-profit in Chicago, IL called Family Matters.
After finishing college, I moved to California to become a middle school English Teacher. There, I learned many strategies for curriculum development, engagement, and culturally-sensitive teaching.
My time as a tutor for C2 Education has given me experience with online tutoring and many different subjects including the ACT and the new SAT.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $40/hr for general education classes like English or History.
I charge $50/hr for SAT and ACT classes.
How did you get started teaching?
I have wanted to become a teacher from a young age. When entering college, I decided to fulfill that goal and get a degree in education. After receiving my degree and earning my license to teach in Illinois and California, I started to teach.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have mainly worked with middle and high school-aged students. My time as a classroom teacher in Chicago and Oakland has given me experience teaching culturally and racially diverse students. I also have experience teaching students ahead and behind their grade levels, many times within the same classroom.
Now, I work with middle and high school students to help them improve their SAT/ACT scores or English/History grades in school.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I volunteer at a local high school as a Mock Trial coach. Recently, the students on the team got to compete in the Alameda County Mock Trial finals. It was a great being able to see just how far all of the students had come since my first days as a coach. Students who did not even know what Mock Trial was at the beginning of the school year were now experts in their roles. Being able to be apart of that growth was amazing.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
It is good to understand that subject knowledge and teaching expertise are completely different skills. Not everyone who is a master of their subject will be a great teacher. Students need to find a tutor who is not only an expert in their given subject but an experienced educator, as well.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should think to themselves, "what are my strengths and what are my areas for growth." While these two questions may sound simple, they are anything but. The questions require you to closely reflect on your experiences. Two students may both be struggling in the same English class for different reasons. Student 1 may have great critical thinking skills, but have trouble with the advanced readings. Student 2 may be a master reader, but has trouble analyzing the text beyond the summary. When going to a tutor or teacher for help, both students should try to think about their specific strengths and specific struggle areas.
