Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We typically like to take a comprehensive analysis of the students learning journey which will be predicated on the time and energy commitment the parents assist in via pay. However, we always make sure we are 100% honest about goals and aspiration and usually sort out an academic plan for the student to take to reach said goal.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Our team is full of current college students that attends schools like Cornell, University of Chicago, and Yale. We all tutor during the schoolyear for underprivileged children and understand the value of patience, persistence, relatability, and strengthening a student’s weaknesses not for grades but their greater academic and life journey.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
We always like to start at a rate of $25 dollars but we do not believe in standardization--it does not make sense with each child being unique and living in completely different circumstances. Thus, we are amiable on price and often will release a quote based on the information provided--but a kids education is priceless relative to college kids making some extra dollars!!
How did you get started teaching?
It starts with my parents, both used to be university professors and I was fortunate to learn under their tutelage and soon saw not everyone got the same chances. So, I started helping my friends with homework from 4th grade and started tutoring in the 7th.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with kids with mental disabilities, underprivileged, college kids, high schoolers, and everything in between. Tutoring is not a one way journey in my estimation...I have something to learn from teaching as much as the student does!
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I remember helping a student in his subject and worked with the teacher to further him along. I was so proud when not only did he get his grade of choice, but also requested to learn more over the summer because the subject was more fun for him now. That, to me, is what it's all about--if learning can be fun then one's academic journey becomes a privilege...not a necessity.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The advice I would give is there is no such thing as a perfect teacher or a better teacher...each teacher can fit a unique student and that is what is at the core of our philosophy. The subject matter never ends up being the obstacle in tutoring but rather the passion the student feels while learning can hinder progress. Thus, find a tutor that makes you excited about learning...or at least a little more enjoyable.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I am a big proponent of self-reflection--I think its what distinguishes some of the worlds most successful people. Consequentially, a student who knows where they are struggling and where they need help is already well on their way to learning--identifying the problem is a first step and a crucial one. Of course, by no means does the student have to pin every weakness or any. Here at Ivy League tutors we believe in assisting in creating this type of thinking.
