My name is Jean and I am a retired elementary school teacher with 35 years of experience in grades K-5. I hold a Masters in Curriculum. I was a mentor for teachers in my district and I created curriculum in writing that was used in classrooms. I was elected Teacher of the Year by my peers in 2013.
I loved teaching all grades. Connecting with students and establishing a mutual bond of respect and caring was and is most important to me. It is also very important to help instill self-confidence and a love for learning in my students. I often check for understanding and make sure that students are comfortable asking questions. I have taught a variety of subjects including whole group reading, small group reading, phonetic development, writing, and math. I created individual writing templates for my students. I did this because children write at a variety of levels. I created songs and chants to help students remember important information. I aslo wrote performances that were curicculum based and students participated in these these performances in front of their peers, parents and friends.
During math, I would encourage students to verbally explain how they got their answer. I also taught students that there is always more than one way to find an answer. I often taught with hands on manipulatives. Most importantly, I did and do stress mental math which is often quite different from paper pencil assignments.
I have tutored college students in essay writing and history at the elementary level. I also have experience with teaching English to second language learners.
I am currently working with two students, and have tutored other students in the past. I have worked with all of my students for at least two years, and some up to four years. In a way, I become part of each family and they would be happy to speak with you on my behalf. I am excited to meet you and your child!

First, we talk! I ask the students about their lives, their likes and their dislikes. I also tell the students about myself. It is important to have good conversation. I then ask them how they feel about school, what their favorite subject is and their least favorite subject. I ask them why they don't like their least favorite subject. I do not give up until they give me a specifc reason for their dislike. This usually tells me most of what I need to know. Most students do not lack capability, they just lack confidence or don't have a love for learning. Based on what the parent has told me I take an assessment of the student's foundational skills and start from there.
I earned a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies, and I have a Multiple Subjects Elementary Teaching Credential. I also have a Masters of Curriculum in Elementary Education.
