About this tutor

While I have a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the “Università degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza” and worked for 12 years in the high-tech industry I also have a background in education. Before moving to the United States I taught math at the high school level for several years, including Sant’Alessio School for Blind where I taught math, computer science and physics. Working with blind students taught me to be flexible and to widen my range of teaching techniques.

Several years ago I decided to give up my high-tech career and spend more time with my daughter at the same time I also started tutoring students from Los Altos and Cupertino Middle and High Schools. I recognize that each student is unique and learns in their own way. I am very patient and normally always able to find a way to make even difficult concepts easy to understand for the students, improving their problem solving skills and building confidence in their abilities.

I am reliable, professional, and enthusiastic teacher with a natural instinct for connecting with children and enjoy every single success with them.

When I started meeting with Marina, I had no sense of direction in my math course. She immediately told me what I need to know in order to succeed in math and began giving me practice problems so that I can be confident with the material. Her methods of teaching have helped me better understand the material and have actually motivated me to continue practicing math outside of the tutoring sessions. What I like most about Marina is that she is straightforward, but in a polite way. She is also very encouraging, which will help when you feel frustrated with the material. Overall, I highly recommend Marina as a math tutor.

Marina knows math, and she knows how to tutor it. She is excellent at figuring out where her student is at and what needs to be done to get that student where he/she needs to be. She is super dedicated, great to work with, hard-working and reliable, and she gets results.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I think the best way to show how I work is from the voice of my previous students.

From Anna F:

She helped me improve by 2 letter grades and also catch up on my basic math skills. She is very friendly, understanding, and patient. Not only will she help with homework but she will also help you study for tests/quizzes. I recommend her because out of all the math teachers/tutors I have encountered, she was the only one to really help me understand and enjoy the curriculum I was faced with.

Marina Sheppard is amazing. She is a phenomenal! My son attends Monta Vista HS in Cupertino and was struggling with geometry. […] Marina's tutoring style is patient and kind. She allowed my son to make mistakes and showed him that his understanding of geometry was stellar - his algebra skills that were poor. Her synopsis of this exemplified her professionalism and ability to locate the key reasons he was failing geometry. My son was finished his second semester with a passing grade = C as he aced his final exam. […]Marina helped my son realize his potential and encouraged him to study harder (and correctly). She is an exceptional tutor with a big heart and a great hug!
