NMST: Nicole's Math And Science Tutoring
About
Hi! My name is Nicole, and I recently graduated from UC Davis with a BS in Statistics and now work at a large internnational consulting firm. My whole life I have been coaching and tutoring, so I have developed a skill for working with children and sharing my knowledge. My philosophy is success through enjoyment and understanding -- I believe that students excel when they enjoy and understand the material. My job is to help students understand the process for the subject, so that they will develop an enjoyment of the subject through a sense of accomplishment.
It is so rewarding to watch a student have that "A-ha!" moment! I truly enjoy being able to help others and allow them to experience that moment so they can develop their own appreciation for the subject.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to start by developing the student-tutor relationship and getting a sense for the student's baseline understanding of the subject. This consists of get-to-know-you questions, questions about school and teachers, and conceptual questions to gauge current understanding. I also firmly believe that it is crucial that the student feels comfortable with the tutor, specifically regarding unclear material.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor's of Science degree in Statistics from UC Davis and now apply that knowledge in my career in consulting. I have tutored math and statistics since high school. When I was 10, I started coaching swim lessons, and I have taught swimming to adults and kids of all levels as both private lessons and group practices.
How did you get started teaching?
I first tutored geometry to a high school freshman when I was in high school. I excelled in geometry when I took it in 8th grade and was able to effectively share that knowledge with my student. He ended up raising his course grade by more than a full letter grade.
What types of students have you worked with?
I mostly work with high school students in math and especially statistics.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a teacher who can cater to you and adjust lessons to you. A teacher's success depends on how well the student grasps the concepts, so it's important to find a teacher who can lay a solid foundation and build off that. Find a teacher who can be a mentor and who you like as a person!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Think about why you are seaking lessons in the first place -- are you just looking for extra practice or do you not understand the basic concepts that test and homework questions are based on? Be honest with your teacher up front!
