About

I find serious value in the one on one work that tutoring provides. Having experienced the first-hand benefits of this practice in a variety of subjects, I can confidently say that, for many students, tutoring is that extra push that brings success. This understanding in combination with my goal of guiding YOU to understand the material, not just get the work done is what I pride myself on.

Additionally, I have an extensive background in several subjects that makes me more than qualified as well as physical work to prove my skills. This includes, graduating with honors from both Kalamazoo College where I majored in Computer Science (with a focus in biotech) as well as the Zoo Magnet (high school) where I specialized in the life sciences.

An example of something I have developed is linked below:

When it comes to tutoring, the thing I enjoy the most is that 'ah-ha!' moment that brings out so many wonderful reactions. For some excitement about learning something new, for others it's relief that they finally get it. I love watching students learn to love the things they study because they can finally understand it.

Frequently asked questions

I'm open to providing a variety of potential tutoring services. Ideally the student has something specific they are trying to improve on. This may be struggling with homework, wanting to improve grades or finding a different perspective that may help to better understand a subject. Whatever the reason be, I would first like to hear from the student (or parent) what it is they are trying to improve in, then we would discuss where they currently stand with the subject. From there I can gauge how to best approach improvement.

My background from college and at the zoo has exposed me to providing varied kinds of educational services, both academic and professional. Being a recent-grad I am mentally primed for the most current methods of education and am frequently discussing learning methods with professors and peers. I also have worked a variety of roles (such as a help desk role and tech support line), which has made me very capable with technology and using the simplest method of explanation for complex topics.

My starting fee is $25/hr, but I am open to discussion.

Having recently graduated college, learning is a core aspect of my daily life. Everyday I learn new things and spread my knowledge to others. At college I was mostly exposed to peers of my age group, but I am interested in sharing what I've learned to a wider community.

In my varied experiences I have had the opportunity to teach people of all ages and all background. This has included everything from young kids still in elementary to graduate students and even those who haven't attended school of any kind in many years.

This summer, while on break, I went to a relatives lakehouse for July 4th. During that week there were many children around ranging in ages from 2-14. Being one of the only adults available for the week I was visiting, I took up the responsibilty of supervising these kids. I truly enjoyed this experience. Getting to see the happy face of these kids getting to play in the water, learn to fish and watch the parade and fireworks on the 4th brought me boundless joy.

As someone who has had hired tutors before I have three pieces of advice.

1. Find a tutor who listens to what and how you want to learn; someone who will give you a new perspective, not just repeat what was said in the classroom.

2. Come prepared because a tutor can help you best if they know exactly what it is you want from them.

3. Be honest. If you don't understand something, tell your teacher, especially when you are one on one. If they move on and you don't understand then your time may be wasted.

I would suggest brining specific examples of things you do not understand or want to learn. This way they know exactly what you need and can explain it and then find similar examples to help you practice.
