UCD Student Math Tutor
About
I am patient, approachable, and committed to helping students truly understand math, not just memorize steps. I bring a hands-on perspective from helping classmates, friends, family, and my own children, and I know how to break down challenging concepts into manageable steps.
As a current math major taking upper-division courses, I understand the challenges students face and can relate to the learning process. I enjoy guiding students through topics I’ve already mastered, helping them build confidence, develop their own understanding, and succeed in ways that feel rewarding and achievable.

Shoné is very sweet! She even goes above and beyond without expecting anything in return. I can tell she works from her heart and from experience! My kid loves her and I have not heard any complaints about her homework since they have started lessons!

She is so patient and makes my child eager to do math even when they are not working together. I have seen a change of confidence in my child since they have started lessons and I love to see it. I was not a fan when I was his age! Nice to see a change

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start by building trust and getting to know the student. I introduce my background and explain how I approach teaching so students feel comfortable and confident from the beginning. I focus on understanding what the student already knows, what they find confusing, and what their goals are.
I aim to make math as clear and manageable as possible by breaking concepts into steps and never assuming prior knowledge. When applicable, I review the student’s syllabus or course materials so our sessions align with what they’re learning in class. My goal is to meet students where they are and help them build confidence and understanding over time.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a math major at the University of California, Davis. My academic background gives me a strong foundation in mathematical concepts and problem-solving, as well as firsthand experience navigating challenging coursework. Being a student myself helps me understand common struggles and explain concepts in a clear, relatable way.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My pricing is based on factors such as the student’s level, subject, and lesson format. I aim to keep my rates fair and transparent, and I’m happy to discuss pricing details to find a structure that works for both the student and their goals.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching by helping my classmates, friends, and family members with math. As others saw the progress and confidence these learners gained, I was encouraged to continue and expand my teaching. I also teach my three children, which has strengthened my ability to explain concepts clearly, patiently, and in multiple ways.
I enjoy teaching because it allows me to help people break through a subject that can feel overwhelming when it isn’t carefully and thoughtfully explained. Watching students gain understanding and confidence in math is both rewarding and motivating for me.
What types of students have you worked with?
I want to be transparent that I am a new tutor without formal professional tutoring experience. My experience comes from helping friends, classmates, and family members, as well as teaching my own children. Through these experiences, I have developed a thoughtful and patient approach to explaining math concepts clearly and step by step.
I am currently a math major taking upper-division courses, which continually challenges me and keeps foundational material fresh and relevant. This allows me to support students in courses I have already completed and in topics that still actively appear in my advanced coursework. Being a student myself helps me relate to the learning process and anticipate common difficulties, and it motivates me to help others succeed in subjects that once challenged me as well.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Over the summer, we worked together to build her understanding step by step and strengthen her confidence with the material. By the end of the course, she not only passed with an A, but also began to genuinely enjoy the class and earned the highest grade on her final project. Seeing her grow in both confidence and interest, and ultimately reach such an important milestone, was incredibly rewarding and reaffirmed why I enjoy teaching.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
My advice is to find a teacher who makes you feel comfortable asking as many questions as you need to fully understand the material. A supportive tutor encourages curiosity, listens carefully, and adapts their explanations to your learning style, helping you gain both confidence and mastery.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Before reaching out to a teacher, it helps for students to try the material on their own first and identify exactly where they are struggling. Knowing what concepts are confusing or what steps are difficult makes tutoring sessions much more effective. This way, the teacher can provide guidance that’s targeted to the student’s specific needs, rather than covering material that might already be understood.
