About

I have been tutoring high school students in Algebra, Geometry, Chemistry and Physics since 2009. For the past four years, I have been a full-time math tutor at Pima Vocational High School (Irvington Rd campus). I also have two children of my own, ages 22 and 15, whom I have helped with their math and science studies.

Over the years, I have found that there is a wide range of obstacles that effect a student's ability to learn. Part of my service is to explore these obstacles, develop solutions to address them, and make learning easier and more efficient.

Although in my current career I work with high school students, I have had experience in the US Navy as a nuclear submarine reactor instructor, and as a financial planner. Both careers involved describing complex subjects in simpler terms and patterns that are more easily grasped by the student or client. I do the same with Algebra and Geometry for my student clients.

I have a Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Columbia University.

I have a Level I Fingerprint Clearance Card from the State of Arizona Department of Public Safety, and a Substitute Teacher Certificate from the Arizona Department of Education. I am also certified as a Highly Qualified Teacher for Math at Pima Vocational High School.

I enjoy helping a student develop his/her self-confidence in their subject, and witnessing their satisfaction through achievement of better grades.

Frequently asked questions

It's important to identify early any obstacles to learning.  Often overlooked, but easily reconciled are student's relationship with their teacher and other students in the class, food as fuel for learning, what period of the day does the student have math class, and the learning environment at home. I will also be vigilant for any gaps in a student's learning experience.

I will need to know what math text is used and any homework that has been assigned. I will ask the student to show me how they would do one of the homework problems.  We would then review the applicable chapter, work through examples and a few homework problems; I would then have the student demonstrate understanding and mastery of the concepts by working through additional problems.

Also considered are the student's qualification for an IEP or 504.

Highly Qualified Teacher (Math) and four years of teaching/tutoring experience at Pima Vocational High School.  Twenty years in the financial service industry as a financial service professional. More than six years in the US Navy as a submarine officer and instructor.  Father of two children, ages 22 and 15.

Standard pricing is $50/hr.  For 10 sessions, $400.  Terms flexible.

Several years ago, one of my wife's friends expressed concern that her daughter was having trouble with her high school algebra class.  My wife 'volunteered' me to help the student since I had an engineering degree, and MBA, and 'I was good at math'.  Not only was I able to help the student with the material, I was able to help her improve her life style and study habits, and apply those good practices to her other classes and her life in general.

It gave me great satisfaction to witness her success and growth as a person.  The student eventually graduated from college with a degree in psychology, and is now living in Georgia with her husband, an Air Force officer.

Subsequent to this initial experience, I sighned up with a substutute teacher placement service and subbed at several high schools around Tucson; eventually settling at Pima Vocational High School as a sub, long-term sub and finally math tutor and teacher.
