Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I usually ask the student to bring what they are currently working in math class as well as any old tets and quizzes. We will go over these together, which usually gives me a really good idea of where the student is at and where they may need to extra reinforcement. I will be asking a lot more quetstions than usual at our first session. I like to hear from the student why they are interested in reveiving tutoring. What do they hope to gain from our sessions? I like to adapt to the students' needs. Also, if there are any math topics, in general, that they have been struggling with (for example, many students of all ages struggle with fractions and may need a refresher despite being in higher math).
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have my master's degree in education from Northern Arizona State University. I worked as a high school math teacher for over ten years. During those years I taught classes of all levels, from remedial math through calculus. I have worked as a tutor for twenty years. I currently tutor at the community college in the mornings and work with middle and high school students in the late afternoons.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching high school math in 2004 in Tempe. I also worked as a tutor in their after school homework lab. I earned my master's degree in education in 2006.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of all levels and abilities. I am certified in both English and math and am also able to help students with study skills. I have worked with students from 5th grade through college. Though most of my experience is with middle and high school students.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Congratulations!! Way to take control of your learning and going above and beyond to help yourself succeed. Don't be afraid to ask as many questions as you need to see if the tutor would be a good fit.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
First, why are you looking into getting a tutor? What are you goals? What are you hoping to get out of the sessions? Also, what are some general math areas or concepts that you just never really grasped (and that may becoming back to haunt you); like is long divisioin something that stumps you everytime even if you understand the algebraic concepts, for example.
