I have been teaching math (grades 7-11) for 32 years. I am certified in secondary math in Arizona which includes a fingerprint/background clearance card. I also taught in Ohio, Virginia, and internationally over the years. My greatest strength is explaining to kids how to do a problem in plain language. Many teachers use such large and unnecessary vocabulary words that leads students to be overwhelmed. Once a child understands a topic, then you can explain the subject specific vocabuary that is important. I also greatly love teaching and kids. I have often built relationships with the families I have tutored for many years and attend their high school graduation parties!I currently coach teachers on effective instruction in math classrooms as well as math intervention classrooms. I am very familiar with the current math curriculums and I am confident that I can help your child!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I usually ask exactly what they need help with and ask them to show me where they began "getting lost"! Sometimes it is just one particular concept that needs explaining, sometimes we need to go back to the beginning of the chapter and build the foundation.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a degree in secondary math education. I am a certified math teacher and I have been teaching for 32 years. I know math curriculum and I know how to connect with students to help them understand math.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

My rate is $60 per hour in your home or $50 per hour if we meet at the public library located on Shea/92nd or the one located off of Thompson Peak Pkwy.

How did you get started teaching?

I went to college to become a teacher. My "what do you want to be" from first grade said "a teacher!"

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked in the classroom and tutoring grades 7-12. I have experience with ESS, ESL, and many other types of students.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

My husband and I hosted an orphan from Latvia this summer. We gave her the experience of a family as well as helped her learn English.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Your tutor needs to have a strong command of the curriculum and have experience teaching it. The best tutors are teachers who have taught the subject because we are already aware of what your misconceptions probably are.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

What do they need help with? Students need to be honest about where they need help in order to find success. Tutoring chapter 2 is a waste of time if you still don't understand chapter 1!
