I start out by seeing what the student already knows, then seeing what they need to know. We call this a gap analysis. Then we form a plan to get the student from where they are to where they need to be.
A key element of my teaching method is a linear path from one concept to the next. Each time I have to start a new topic, I start with a concept the student already knows and then tweak it a little bit to be one the new concept. That gives them s oath they can follow easily.
