Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The main objective of any tutoring session is customer satisfaction. Finding out what topic a person wishes to study and what is already known about the topic allows for individual approach. The rest of the process consists of connecting the new information to what is already known in a most efficient way possible. TI-84 graphing calculator, WolframAlpha.com and other technologies are used to make illustrations clearer.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have Master's in Applied Mathematics from Arizona State University and over 20 years of teaching experience at high school, college and university levels.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Tutoring in person: $40/hour for the first hour, $30/hour for all consecutive hours. Virtual tutoring through online: $25/hour for the first hour and $20/hour for all consecutive hours.
How did you get started teaching?
I have been a tutor from 1997 and a math instructor from 2004 onwards
What types of students have you worked with?
I have had a privilege to work with all types of students from all socioeconomic levels. I have taught math for engineers, math for medical professionals and math for any general education program. All levels of math from Arithmetic through Calculus III and Differential Equations are welcome.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I am fond of all the successes that my students have achieved. Some have gained confidence in their math skills and reduced math anxiety. Most have increased their final result by at least one letter grade. Some of my former students have become math tutors themselves and it is always a wonderful feeling when you get to pass the torch to the next generation of talented math educators and colleagues.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Math is a language and art. Every math student is unique and will require an individualistic approach to be most effective. I would encourage a student to look for an instructor with whom a report can be easily built. The spirit of collaboration and cooperation is key to a productive study session. This may require trying out a few instructors, until the right individual is found. Once you have a person that you are glad to work with - the results will follow.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Look at all the topics you have to master. Does your tutor/instructor have the ability to go as far as you have to go? Does your instructor have the right depth of knowledge and the ability to put that knowledge in plain and practical terms?
