About
I have been teaching/tutoring for the past 10 years in the areas of Humanities and Mathematics. I have a strong passion for words and numbers, which can at first appear strange; but, I am a teacher at heart and love to both teach and learn from my students!
I have achieved Master Degrees in both Literature and Philosophy, and I also hold a Minor in Mathematics. I currently teach English at Yavapai College in Northern Arizona. I believe myself to be qualified to teach in the class, in one-on-one settings, and in diverse online platforms including Populi, Blackboard, and Google Classroom. I am also certified as both a Secondary and Adult Education teacher for the State of Arizona.
The greatest satisfaction of the work I do is seeing my students succeed. I love the small jumps they make enroute to their aspirations in the academic world. I also love seeing the connections they make between what they learn to their daily lives.
I would be erroneous to forget how rewarding it is for a teacher to learn from his students! It makes for quite a rewarding life!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I first hope to make a connection with my student. I look to their interests and strengths in order to engage their creativity and their intellectual gifts.
I also try to assess their struggles. Quite often for students there is a disconnect between the expected outcome and the ability to recognize that their strengths can aide in their success. For example, a student my not enjoy reading; but, they may be quite gifted in following a storyline in a TV show or videogame. Utlizing those gifts to nurture an appreciation for reading would be the next steps in the process.
Lastly, I hope to build up skills within my students geared towards longevity and success in both academics and in life. The hope is the student is able to understand that their struggles can become a strength in the journey of achieving their goals!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have earned a Minor Degree, 2 Bachelor Degrees, and have completed a Teaching Credential Program.
Further, I have continued to increase my knowledge in my two Master Degree programs.
I have tutored for 2 years and have been a teacher for 5 years at both the Junior High and High School levels.
I am also Certified in the State of Arizona to teach Secondary and Adult Education.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
It will depend on the situation and the number of subjects, but my base rate would be $50/hr.
How did you get started teaching?
My mother was my inspiration. She was my first teacher and from thereon I just wanted to teach. She is my benchmark, and I aspire to be as good an educator as she continues to be now!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with a wide range of students, those who range from high achievers to immediate intervention. I have worked with students who have special needs, 504s, IEPs and ISPs. I use a number of scaffolding strategies to meet the needs of all students.
