Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start by finding out where the student is, what their needs are and what subject and/or class specifically they need tutoring in. I then establish if it’s an area I feel qualified to help them in; if not I will be upfront about that as their educational goals and needs are most important. I then see if they’ve received tutoring before and try to find out what learning style will be best to work with them. I will then go from there, and dive in! :-)
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a college degree in Women’s Studies, a program that involved heavy amounts of writing. I also minored in Mathematics in college and it was my strongest subject while I was a student. For almost two years additionally, I worked for an accounting firm as their proofer and editor for financial documents. So basic math, as well as higher levels of math, as well as writing, reading, proofing, vocabulary, and grammar are all strengths of mine and topics I am prepared to Tutor in extensively.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $30 an hour to start, as a general baseline. This may vary depending on subject, etc and is open to discussion.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching when I was in high school and middle school even when I began babysitting and tutoring, and worked with volunteering programs in various jobs I’ve had.
What types of students have you worked with?
A bit of all kinds. A variety of age groups. More experienced with younger groups of students. I’ve worked a little with special needs students as well as accelerated students and every skill level in between.
