Over the years between teaching in private schools, tutoring, homeschooling, and even just helping others learn new things my favorite part has been watching the "I get it light bulb" go off. Sometimes with math it is changing your words around or expressing it in a more tangible way that makes all the difference to a child who is stuggling. Finding how a student learns and encouraging them that anyone can succeed in mathmatics as long as they have the proper tools and knowledge on how to access and use them. For over 20 years I've enjoyed taking time to share with others my love of not only learning math, but also how thy can apply it to their own lives.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Most of my students have been "stuck" and just asking them what is it they struggle with helps open not only a dialog but also helps get a better understanding of how they communicate about things. From there I ask for them to bring in an assignment or past test where they struggled to see just what stage the student may be making an error. Look to see if it repetitive or a common mistake and to view their math habits. Depending on the student's goals we continue to work in a spiral progression trying to build new concepts based on mastery of work.

$15.00 per 30 minute session. The first 20 minute session is free, this is to see how the connection and communication is between student and tutor.
How did you get started teaching?
Truthfully, it is something that I've always just done naturally and have continued to do in many different ways through the years. Other than turoring as my side job before getting married, I was asked to come on staff at the school my oldest son was attending after volunteering in his classroom. It didn't take long to see that finding ways to explain things to others was a natural gift and one that was not only useful but exciting.
What types of students have you worked with?
Mostly K-8th grade students, ranging from students with ADHD to geeking out with some truly gifted math brained kids.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Take time to make sure you are comfortable with any instructor and make sure you share what you are thinking. Conquering hard things isn't impossible, it is just hard work.
