Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Hello!
I like to start with any diagnostic assessment information a parent may have. Sometimes the schools provide it, sometimes they don't. If parent doesn't have any, then I provide one at our first session that can be done during or outside of tutoring. A typical session usually includes working on math skills identified as needing support from the diagnostic assessment. We also practice fluency skills with some type of quick math activity or game. This allows me to observe the thinking process of a child as we engage in math talk. I provide activities related to the child's grade level curriculum, and these activities emphasize learning strategies for solving problems, building upon critical thinking skills, and improving test-taking and study skills. I also like to look ahead at content that will be studied, as well as papers that have already been graded so that we can prepare or review. Also, I provide parents with resources that can be used at home, such as some fluency skills games or free websites that focus on improving various math skills. You may not see ALL of this in one session, but this gives an idea of what I can provide. Thanks, Stephanie
