About

Experienced tutor/teacher with 20+ years of experience including work with Huntington Learning as a tutor, a free-lance editor of math textbooks and test booklets(I wrote the answer keys!) and 18 years as a classroom teacher(8 years as the dept. chairman)

I have a B.A. in Math and Psychology and an M.A. in Teaching.

Will meet you in your home, library or other place to make it convenient for you. Hours of availability are very flexible...we can learn when and where YOU need to.

But most importantly-I understand math and I understand that not everyone gets it the first time (or the second time). I'm willing to work with you until you're comfortable with the topic-THEN we move on. (This is how I run my classroom. This is how my tutoring runs-trust me!) Math can be fun...but it's not easy for everyone-but I can make it better!

I really enjoy working with kids and seeing the 'light bulb' come on as learning begins to happen. After my time in the classroom, I know that we don't all learn the same way and that some methods are flat out irritating to some students although very effective for other. i enjoy the challenge of finding the method that makes a topic, first, understandable and not threatening to the individual and, hopefully-later, fun for them. This is something that can rarely been accomplished in today's classrooms but, certainly, should be a goal for good tutoring. We remember things so much better if we can connect something pleasant(fun) with learning. I always learn something from each tutoring experience whether I learn the topic at a deeper level or I get to see the struggle of learning from a new perspective.

AND I truly do enjoy the challenge of working with teenagers! They are the BEST!

Frequently asked questions

when I first meet a new student, I try to find out who they are and why they think the need tutoring. Do they want homework help? Are they preparing for a high stakes test? Is there some area in their math background that is weak that we can address to create success for the student? What will it take for the student to feel more positive about their ability to be stronger in math?

I gave a B.A. in Math and Psychology and a M.A. in Teaching.

I received numerous trainings in teaching methods while I taught for 18 yrs in the high school classroom. Many of these methods are useful in turoring individuals. The key to tutoring is perseverance to find the optimal method for the individual student. This may not be a possibility on today's crowded classrooms, but should certainly be important in one-to-one tutoring.
