About
I am motivated to work in a field that values self-motivation and dependability. My education and prior jobs have given me the relevant capabilities to be successful as an online tutor. As an English tutor, reading coach, and instructor of the English Language Learners’ Beginning Conversation Group, I have extensive experience in service and communication with a diverse customer base. I love my job because my ultimate goal is to be a full time author, so being an English tutor allows me to consistently review my subject in detail.
Quality instruction provides students with methods of studying and project execution, resulting in lifelong confidence to work independently and utilize the tutor as a guide.
For example, students find better comprehension in reading a textbook chapter when they first outline the material, actively read the chapter, and then review their notes. Likewise, pre-writing has a powerful impact on successfully organizing an essay. I have students begin by labeling their three main body paragraphs, then plugging in 2-3 subtopics for each. The next step is to create a thesis statement that can be applied to all three topics before crafting topic sentences for each paragraph that reiterate the idea of the thesis. The initial focus on the three main body paragraphs strengthens the focus in the introduction and conclusion. This prewriting activity creates a foundation of clarity and structured flow of thought.

How did you get started teaching?
I was working at the gym on campus when I was 19. I told my coworker that I would love to have a job that focused on writing. He talked to his old boss at the learning center on campus. After I passed the essay requirements, I was hired as a part time college English tutor. After 3 years, I was asked to run a conversation group, which includes helping ESL students strengthen their pronunciation, vocabulary, and casual conversation skills.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all types of students, including special needs.
