Elementary School Teacher
About
Hello! My name is Alexis and I have been a 4th grade general educucation teacher for three years. I will be moving up to 6th grade in the coming 2020-2021 school year. I love the focus on the positives of students and no progress is too small. I want to help them not only succeed but to feel confident in their ability. I have conducted tutoring in my school since I started, both group and one-on-one, and my students have improved greatly with the additional help. What I have found is that once their confidence in themselves improves, their ability to retain and apply the lessons that they have learned increases as well. I want the kids to feel good about themselves and their content knowledge will follow. I am excited to help your student and can't wait to see them thrive!
There are many aspects that I love about being a teacher. But being able to see the kids confidence in themselves increase as they progress to mastery of content has to be at the top. The look they get on their face when they realize the concept has clicked puts a huge smile on my face. And their confidence in themselves and their ability increases to the point where they like to show off and show me what they can do. I love when they find joy in their work, even if it isn't their favorite subject.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I always start by getting to know my students. What they love, what they hate, and even the reasons behind their choices. The connection we make, and the relationship we build, before tutoring begins is just as important as the tutoring itself. I want my students to know that I am invested in them and I care about them and their success.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have my Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education and have been teaching 4th grade for the past three years. This year, the 2020-2021 school year I will be moving up to 6th grade. I know this isn't a lot of technical experience, but I have been teaching and working with students since I was 12 and have loved every minute of it.
How did you get started teaching?
It's not that I got started teaching, I just knew kids were my calling. I love working with them and seeing their success, no matter how small. I have been a Sunday school teacher at my church, and Tae Kwon Do teacher at my academy, a volunteer at my elementary school, and finally a certified teacher. Kids have been in my life and have fueled many of my choices. They make my days better and I can see being a tutor having the ability to bring more joy to my life.
What types of students have you worked with?
As previously stated, I am a 4th grade teacher but I have worked with students of all ages. I have worked with three and four years olds, all the way through high school students.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
My advice would be get ready to have fun but to also work hard. I like mixing work with laughs and jokes because no one wants to listen to me talk for hours on end and not enjoy a single minute of it. Students learn better when they are engaged. This may not mean that they love the content we are studying, but I try to break down the content to steps they can understand with jokes intermixed.
