Slay English Tutoring
About
For three years, I have had the pleasure of tutoring at the University of Alabama at Birmingham's University Writing Center. Here not only have I received some of the most efficient tutoring training in the state of Alabama by distinguished professors from Purdue University, but I have also worked with a wide variety of students ranging from scholarship applicants to doctoral dissertation students. I've earned my Master's in Creative Writing and have been well versed in American Literature, basic English mechanics, grammar, MLA & APA formatting, etc. Additionally, I tutor students at any stage in the writing process, whether it's brainstorming ideas or polishing a final draft with edits. I now possess a deep-seeded passion not only for helping students improve their writing, but also for instilling an excitement for writing in the students that I work with. Although my experience lies within the realm of collegiate tutoring, I am more than willing to work with teenagers and children as well.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
After taking a moment to get to know the student, I always like to ask what the student's top concerns are for the assignment at hand. I will address these concerns first, then depending on the student's stage in the writing process, I will either help them generate ideas for an assignment or look for global errors in their rough draft. Sentence-level errors will be the last to be addressed, unless there is an abundance of small errors that make the assignment difficult to read.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Education:
Master's in Creative Writing from UAB
Bachelor's in English from JSU.
Experience:
1 year teaching English 101 at UAB
2 years tutoring at UAB's Writing Center
1 year tutoring at JSU's Writing Clinic
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

How did you get started teaching?
I became employed as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where I tutored full-time for one year before advancing to independently teaching English 101 and 102.
What types of students have you worked with?
Mostly college students ranging from freshmen to doctoral students. I am also willing to work with high school and middle school students.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a teacher who can help you to the best of their abilities while also making it a fun experience for you. If you become interested and excited about writing, it will make the process so much more enjoyable for you, and you may even find yourself wanting to write soon.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Write out any of your concerns in regards to specific assignments, and also write out your general weaknesses when it comes to writing. This includes brain storming, prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, grammar, punctuation, and phrasing.
