Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first thing that I do with a new student is to identify their reading style and see where we can improve. There are a few key approaches to SAT reading. By choosing a suitable method, you can increase your reading comprehension and ability to answer the questions on the SAT in an effective and timely manner.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
The standard pricing is $50 per hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I was offered a position at my local church to tutor students in SAT reading and writing. While I enjoy teaching writing, I feel my passion lies more within the reading section of the SAT.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with high school students from 9th to 11th grade and grade schoolers in 6th grade. I also have experience in dealing with students with ADD.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would recommend hiring a teacher that can create a curriculum based upon your individual learning style. It is important to hire someone that understands that students all learn in different ways and at different paces. The SAT is a simple, yet difficult test. It is important to increase your efficiency, and the best way to do that is to hire someone that can work with your style of learning.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I think the most important thing for a student to do is to clearly state their expectations. They must set forth a "reach" goal that they wish to achieve and is reasonably feasible. By establishing a set goal, it helps me tailor SAT tactics for your goals. If you are struggling and wish to reach 700, the tactic will be different than if you are excelling and wish to push the bounds towards 800. Setting a clear goal helps me frame our sessions and make use of our time.
