Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I talk to the student about what they are learning and see what they are not understanding. I look over what they have been working on. I have them start working a problem. I like to have them verbally step through the problem with me as we are working the problem. I try to get to know the student and build a relationship with them. That way they feel more comfortable if they make mistakes.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BS in Education. I have taught Mathematics for 25 years. I have worked as a online tutor for my district. I am still teaching high school Algebra 1 and 2.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Not really it is based on the student's needs.
How did you get started teaching?
I had always wanted to be a teacher since I was in elementary school.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have tutored students from 6th grade to seniors in high school. I have worked with students with special needs, 504, and other disabilities.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I was tutoring a young man that was struggling with writing linear equations. He was very bright but was getting confused on terminology. As we were working, he started understanding the process. He said he got it. We went over a few more problems and he did understand. His Mother was sitting next to him and asked me how I showed him what to do. I went over my process with her and she was very happy because she said he truly understood it.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find one that is willing to be patient. One that you can be yourself and ask questions. Don't try to rush their learning experience.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are they actually working on? If possible, where do they get confused.
