About this tutor

https://www.linkedin.com/in/nancy-xu-21906419a/

Hello, my name is Nancy, and I am not a business :)

I'm an English major currently on leave from Yale University, and I would love nothing more than to spend my time helping people learn to write and read. I have over six years of tutoring experience with both fiction and academic writing, including as a Writing Partner at the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning.

My goal is to help you bring the elements of your reading and writing that interest /you/ the most to the forefront of your work. I love discovering ideas with students of all ages and using writing to develop them and communicate them to the communities around us.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

1) Prompt/Assignment/Premise - what's the goal of this piece?

2) What interests you most about this topic?

3) Talk through your ideas and throw thoughts around.

4) Draft, re-draft, re-draft ruthlessly! (Usually on your own)

5) Regroup to edit for argument, structure, and style.

6) Fine detail work - a sentence-by-sentence polish.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in English at Yale University.

I have six years of writing tutoring experience with high school and university students. I am most familiar with literary analysis and other English papers, but I have also worked with short stories and long-form narratives, screenplays, poems, STEM research papers, history essays, etc.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

My standard fee is $30/hour, and I work on a sliding scale to accomodate students of different backgrounds. Please let me know if the fare would be a financial hardship.

What types of students have you worked with?

I work primarily with high school and college students from a range of academic backgrounds. Where tutors who specialize in younger ages build critical literacy and reading foundations, I focus on facilitating creative and academic written communication and developing students' critical thinking abilities in all walks of life.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Don't give up! Finding a tutor (in any subject) who will be a good fit for you and your learning style will take trial and error, and it is absolutely okay to talk about what works and what doesn't work for you in a session. Our goal for one-on-one tutoring is to support /you/.
