Mr. Polgar is an outstanding tutor and professional. Beyond challenging my daughter to think critically about the mathematical concepts she is learning and seeking to master, he is also effective at reminding her how much she already knows thereby helping build her confidence. Above all, he is reliable, encouraging, patient, and genuinely kind.

My son was struggling a bit in calculus. He had a good foundation in Algebra and Trig, but this class proved to be a challenge. He tried talking with his teacher to understand the material better and that wasnt helping. We reached out to Steven after my son really struggled on a test in the middle of the first semester. (We knew there would be bigger problems later if we didnt fix this.) Steven worked with our schedule and came to the house. He quickly figured out the gaps in my sons understanding and helped him bridge those gaps. He also followed up with texts and calls to make sure my son understood the material. By mid-terms this January, my son scored an A on the exam!! Steven did a great job at explaining the material in a way my son could understand. We still use Steven as needed. I am keeping his name so when my next son takes calculus, we have the name of someone who can help!

    Frequently asked questions

First, I have to learn what the student understands and what skills he has mastered, as well as gain a general idea of his learning style and abilities. Then, as we become better acquainted, I challenge him to reach beyond his perceived limits.

My pedagogical approach is Platonic: rather than expound, I lead the student to understand by answering questions. The ideas he doesn't know or understand, I try to explain using examples which are concrete enough for him to understand. (To avoid misunderstandings: I use the pronoun "he" inclusively, in the sense accepted in English since well before the time of Chaucer.)

You may refer to my resume which includes a Master's in Math Education and a Bachelor's in Math and English from the University of Pennsylvania.

Make sure the teacher knows his or her material but is capable of explaining it to you in a way that suits your particular learning style and perspective.
What are my basic problems in trying to understand a particular subject or topic? When do I lose a train of thought and what distracts me or what is the point I do not understand?
