First I spend sometime getting to know them student to set him/her at ease. We might play a quick game or look through a few pictures of my family and hobbies. Then I complete a thorough assessment which allows me to determine what my student's needs and strengths are. After that I set goals for the student and share them with the family. I keep the family informed about the student's progress through written, monthly updates as well as conversation during our tutoring session.
