About this tutor

Welcome! My name is Karoline, and I graduated cum laude from Harvard College with a BA in English and an additional focus in applied mathematics. I grew up in Sweden and Texas and have extensive experience teaching everything from PSAT/SAT to nonprofit organization building to improvisational theater games. I scored a 2340 on the 2400 SAT, 236 on the old PSAT, 800 on three SAT subject tests, and 5 on more than 6 AP exams.

I have tutored for over 6 years (please reference my LinkedIn for more information), working in a variety of disciplines and formats (one-on-one, small class, large classes, online). I am comfortable teaching general math, English (writing, editing, college level, etc), history, and other subjects by request.

My MAIN strength, however, is TEST PREP. I am an EXCELLENT SAT / PSAT / ACT tutor, and I do not say that lightly. In high school, I tutored myself from a 2000 to a 2340 within a few months, and along the way, took every Collegeboard, Kaplan, Princeton Review, Barron's test on the market. I know these entrance exams, and their weaknesses, inside out. I developed my own highly effective strategies that you will not find in any class or book that will ABSOLUTELY raise your score. My approach is very practical, specific to the test, will reduce test anxiety, and completely unparalleled.

BOOTCAMP: Due to high demand from my private tutoring students (I freelance with several educational services including Smarten Up and The Tutorverse), I am starting a SUMMER BOOTCAMP specifically focused on the SAT. This is a 4 or 8 week class, depending on the student's current grasp of the test (determined by a diagnostic test). Each class is capped at 12 students to insure as much individualized attention and practice as possible. We meet for 3 hours a day, 4 days a week. We start with a diagnostic hour, where I meet each student and observe their current test taking strategies and precision. Then, in our 3 hour class sessions, I teach my test prep skills in a comprehensive crash course environment that allows for questions, real-time practice, and constant feedback - all of which contribute to fast-paced and detailed learning. BOOTCAMP is especially effective for the student who needs that extra push to commit to the SAT and has more time to do so outside of an already busy school year. It is offered at a lower per hour rate than my private tutoring, which makes it a more affordable option for many families.

MAY's BOOTCAMP is entirely booked, but I am starting a session in JUNE that is currently accepting students. Because we cap the class at 12 for maximum learning, it fills up rather quickly. Please contact me if you are interested - I'd love to get to know you and your students, discuss the class in more depth, and answer any questions you may have. Thank you!

I equip my students with not only the technical skills necessary for their academic potential, but also with lifelong intuition and curiosity. I infuse humor, practicality, and a clear structure into my lessons. My students almost always exceed expectations after working with me.

Karoline was a wonderful tutor, and I worked with her for a long time when I was preparing my exams and application for universities in the US. She was always a steady, confident, and engaging tutor. I learned a lot from her that I would not have learned by studying by myself and/or using books. Our sessions involved specific approaches to taking the SAT and Subject Tests. I was familiar with the content on both tests, but she was helpful for being more skilled and more careful. She had specific strategies and overall tips about the test that were unique. For example, she taught me various ways of marking the reading comprehension passages that gave me more focus on the questions first and underlining key phrases in the questions. This approach was beneficial, because I could watch for the questions as I read the passage and answer them correctly. She was very good with me even though I am an international student, and my language skills were not completely excellent. She spoke clearly and helped me solve problems in many ways. She was especially helpful with my reading and essay skills, because those were my weaknesses. Karoline was punctual, organized, and professional. I felt very comfortable around her (she has a great sense of humor) and consider her my friend.

I worked with Karoline several months the first semester of my senior year. She was wonderful! She was able to dissect why I had the mental and academic barriers I did, and then we worked together through my trouble areas multiple times. She was great with follow-up and reexamining issues that came up. We took several practice tests together, simulating the real testing environment, which helped. Positive interaction, patient and firm, funny too. She was able to effectively tutor me to my full SAT potential, and I'm very happy about it.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

Because of my academic background, credentials, and extensive teaching experience, I have a competitive rate for my lessons. It's less than what you would pay for elite test prep / general academic help companies, but the same quality of tutoring, which is a bargain. However, I know the price can be prohibitive to some, so I am open to negotiating a different rate, especially if you are looking for ongoing mentorship. I believe that any student who is truly committed to their education deserves the chance to reach their intellectual potential!

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with low-income inner city students with little exposure to test prep and classes that promote critical analysis, very elite students who have multiple tutors helping them around the clock, students with ADHD, students who do well in school but are not as proficient in test taking, international students, and everyone in between. Most of my students are 13 - 24 years old, but I happily teach all ages!
