About this tutor

Math tutoring style is interactive. Questions by Mr. Marciel throughout each session guide student learning, using plain language to make concepts easier to grasp. Mini white boards, dry erase markers and erasers are used for teaching and demonstration, as well as student use. Tablet computer supplements the sessions as needed, with a library of electronic math textbooks and workbooks, scientific calculator, graphing utility, and other dedicated resources.

Improvements in test scores and course grades are great, but what is more important is to see improved learning and problem-solving skills.

My granddaughter was in Honors Geometry last year as a Sophomore at West Tech and was having a very difficult time. Ken was very patient and competent in helping her to succeed in this course. I would recommend him to anyone who needs math assistance.

Ken has an amazing ability to help students to understand math concepts and help them succeed in their studies. He was instrumental in assisting my son through his high school math and I have referred other students to him for assistance. He is the best!!!!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Most students meet with me for 1 or 1.5 hours at regularly scheduled times each week at Sahara West Library. We work from the student's textbook, or from my textbook in the subject.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

In 2009, I passed the Praxis II Content Knowledge Exam in Secondary Mathematics Instruction, and became licensed as a Highly Qualified Teacher in Secondary Mathematics by Clark County School District. Additionally, I have passed three actuary exams, in probability, financial mathematics, and statistics for risk modeling.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

$50 for 1 hour, $65 for 1.5 hours, and 10% discount for 10 prepaid sessions

How did you get started teaching?

In 2008, I made a career change to secondary mathematics instruction. That year, I began tutoring, substitute teaching, and earning a teaching license in secondary mathematics.

What types of students have you worked with?

Grade 6 through college students and adult learners, remedial through gifted and talented, math competitors, standardized test prep, and career changers

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

Passing the actuarial exam in statistics for risk modeling.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Find out how many years of teaching experience he or she has in the subject.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

How often do you feel you would need to meet with the teacher to get the desired grade in the course? Do you think 1 hour per session would be enough, or do you think 1.5 hours would be better?
