About this tutor

I am an experienced, knowledgeable Tutor with a Master's Degree in Biology, and I have completed coursework towards a PhD. I have been tutoring and teaching college, high school, and school age students in all areas of Science, Math, Statistics, Test Preparation, and English and Writing (I have had a number of articles and photographs published) for more than 20 years. I also have experience with Special Needs Students, and I am happy to offer Online Tutoring, as well as Homeschooling, Cyber School, and Enrichment/Independent Studies Assistance.

I began as a "Peer Tutor" in High School, tutoring Math and Chemistry. I continued tutoring in all areas of Math, Science, Chemistry, Biology and Biological Sciences, Statistics, and Writing, as well as student advising throughout College and Graduate School. During that time, I also interned in Zoo Education, Zoo and Wildlife Research, and began teaching at the College level and in After-School Enrichment Programs. Since then I have taught at several Colleges and Universities, Zoos, Museums of Natural History, and taught and tutored school-age, middle school, high school, college, and graduate school students.

I have an enabling and empowering teaching philosophy, and I enjoy being able to help students to learn the subjects that I teach and to help them to develop their critical reasoning abilities, creative skills, study skills, and thinking skills. Essentially, I try to teach them how to think, learn, reason, and to realize their full potentials.

I know Math & Stats aren't everyone's favorite subjects in the world, but I enjoy helping students to learn about Math & Stats and helping them to see they aren't so bad and can actually be fun and helpful to learn!

I thoroughly enjoy sciences and the discovery and excitement they can offer. I also enjoy helping others to learn about science and helping them get through the rough spots in the learning process. Learning Science can and should be fun!

I have always enjoyed writing, and I have had a number of articles, papers, and photographs published. I will not write research papers, term papers, or other writing assignments for you, but I can help you to write better and more effectively, as well as edit your writing to help present what you have written and help you get better grades on your papers and writing assignments. Most of my past students have enjoyed seeing their grades improve drastically, and I will do my best to help you, too.

I am a dedicated, patient, and understanding tutor and instructor. I have helped a wide variety of students of various ages and backgrounds to learn and become better, more independent thinkers and learners. Let’s see what we can do working together!

I enjoy being able to help students to learn the subjects that I teach and to help them to develop their critical reasoning abilities, creative skills, study skills, and thinking skills. Essentially, I try to teach them how to think, learn, reason, and to realize their full potentials.

Martin has been a great tutor for my son. He has been confident, patient, and understanding in working with my son who has special needs. He has helped my son in several subjects, and has helped him to overcome his difficulties and progress in pace with the other mainstream students. I recommend him without any reservations.

Martin helped my daughter out with Chemistry. I don't understand that at all, but he sure does! He was patient and kind with my daughter, who has ADD, and that meant so much to me. She's doing so much better since he started helping her.

Martin really knew his stuff, and he was able to teach me so I could understand better. I was really lost before that! Now, I'm doing better in school and getting better grades!

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I like to spend some time getting to know my student a little first... to see what their goals, ambitions, and interests are. It helps to adapt the subject matter to make it more interesting and appealing to the student. Assessing their academic needs, strengths, and weaknesses is also important for positive results and making the most of the time spent with the student.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have completed undergraduate and graduate courses in education, and I have participated in educational workshops. Perhaps the most effective education and training is helping others to learn and overcome their shortcomings and achieve their potentials. In short, teaching and tutoring have been furthering my education and training each and every day, and always will.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

My tutoring rates may vary to some degree depending upon frequency and duration of tutoring sessions and the distance I am from the student.

Second hours (and more) in the same session at the same site have significantly discounted rates. This would include a second hour, etc. for a second student in the same family in the same session.

How did you get started teaching?

I began tutoring as a Peer Tutor in my sophomore year in high school, and I have been teaching and tutoring at least part-time since then, for over 20 years.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with students of all ages from a diversity of socioeconomic backgrounds. My students have included elementary, middle school, high school, college, and adult students from rural, suburban, urban, and inner-city areas.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I enjoyed biking over the course of a month to raise awareness and funds for children with cancer. It was rewarding to hear the stories of the children I took part in helping in biking for a cure.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Most importantly, the teacher you choose should care about you, your needs, and your progress, and sincerely desire to postively impact your education and your abilities to learn.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

Students should think through what their needs really are. There is an immediate smaller picture, such as the current issues they may be experiencing with the subject matter, and there is the bigger picture, like what they want to do next in life, whether it is college, further education beyond college, or their potential career.

The more the teacher knows about the student's needs, the better they are able to help the student achieve their goals and ambitions for both the immediate future and looking further ahead.
