FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I like to have a chance to look over course requirements, if applicable, so I can get an idea of what skills and subject matter we will be working on. Once we meet, I’ll ask the student what they struggle with and what they’re good at, so I can assess their skill level and certain areas of focus. I’d then start off by working through a current assignment that is giving them trouble.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I received my writing intensive Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota in 2014 with a major in Asian Languages and Literature that focused on Japanese studies. I have worked at the University of Minnesota Libraries for the past nine years, where I utilize research and analytical skills.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

I haven’t decided on a standard rate and set my price on a case-by-case basis.

How did you get started teaching?

I first did after school tutoring in high school for a few middle school students. I don’t have too much experience with one-on-one tutoring, but I am confident in my abilities and am very interested in working with students.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

Last September my cousin got married and my brother visited America for the first time in years since moving to Japan in 2005. I got to spend some much needed time with him, and he and my boyfriend got along famously. The wedding was a wonderful celebration of family and love that I’ll never forget.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Keep an open mind and try not to get discouraged when it feels like you’re not making any progress. Also, utilize your public library resources! Working at the libraries gives me quick and easy access to all types of print, audiovisual, and electronic content that I can provide to enhance the student’s learning experience.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

What would you consider to be your biggest problem area?

What do you want to work on the most?

What are your strengths when it comes to your studies?

What are your goals or expectations for tutoring?
