About
I have 25 years of teaching experience. I will modify work to fit your individual needs as I have done for all my students for the past 25 years. You can set your own goals. I do all tutoring online through Zoom as then we can share any documents or worksheets. I have written a writing textbook. I have an advanced degree in English and writing. I also have an English as a Second Language Degree. I have received nine Excellence in Education awards over the years. I am certified as an AP English instructor and my scores have been above the national average for the past twelve years.
What I enjoy most is the ability to help students succeed. It is rewarding that so many of my former students come back to tell me how I have helped them, especially with writing (many took the textbook I wrote for their course with them to college). Over the past 13 years, a further reward has been helping young people to exceed the baseline score in standardized testing. I enjoy helping people to see how they can improve in education and acquire skills in English and writing.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
All sessions would be online through Zoom. The first session will always start with a discussion of what you would like to achieve. We will discuss where you want to go, how you would like to get there, and, possibly, a time frame. Then we can meet however many times a week you prefer. Some students only would like tutoring for an essay, a project, or a test they are prepping for. Some students would prefer general help with a variety of skills. All would be discussed at out first meeting and we will go from there.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have 25 years of tutoring and teaching students in grades 6-12. I have tutored individuals for various reasons (college essays, SAT/ACT prep, general writing). I am a certified AP English instructor. I have an advanced degree in English and writing.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My pricing is a bit negotiable, but will start at $40.00 an hour.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all types of students, people whose first language was not English, those who were on a path to attend rigorous university programs, younger children who wanted help with their skills in reading and writing, and my students have come from all different backgrounds.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Since we are in the midst of a horrible time, a recent event I am fond of is the release of Hamilton on Disney+. It sounds cliche to play that card, but we saw it last year and not only is it a quality and enjoyable production, it reminds me of times when we could gather and not worry.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for teachers who have a broad range of experience and show some flexibility. Many people follow a set program and that may not be what you need. Also look for people with a variety of experiences. If you are looking for help with writing, sometimes English teachers have not had to take any grammar courses, nor have they really had to teach it, so look for a teacher with a background in writing. A lot of English teachers focus on literature which can limit what they can bring to the table.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Whether you would like to get help with writing or literacy or both.
