About

I have a Bachelor of Music degree (2002) from the Universtiy of North Texas with minors in Music Theory and Mathematics. I went on to study Physics at the University of Maryland. I have been teaching and tutoring since 1997. I primarily work with music students, but with my extensive science and math background, I am very comfortable and experienced in tutuoring those subjects to individuals. In the field of music I have worked with individuals and groups on all woodwinds and piano and can prepare students for important auditions and performances.

I love connecting with all sorts of students, children and adults! Every student is unique and offers me a different set of rewards and challenges. My favorite part of a lesson is when a student understands a concept and applies it correctly for the first time. The accomplishment makes everyone feel good and provides momentum for the next challenge!

Frequently asked questions

The first meeting involves a short question and answer session. I like to make the student feel as comfortable as possible before jumping right into the subject matter. I will ask the student questions about their grade level, favorite parts of the subject matter, their strengths, and what their learning goals will be in working with me. From there, I will ask a variety of questions or ask them to demonstrate a variety of skills and knowledge through short exercises related to their subject. That way, I can gain a wide view of their strengths, how the student learns, and what areas need the most improvement. Knowing their current skill level, I will then develop a strategy for how we will divide the time within the tutoring session and relay it to the student and parents during the first session. Going forward, we will proceed with that strategy and change the way we divide the time in future sessions as needed.

I have been tutoring individuals since 1997 when I was still in high school. Since then, I have taken pedagogy courses and have kept a near constant stream of students. I have been teaching and tutoring full time since 2007 in both group and one-on-one settings. I have a Bachelor of Music in saxophone performance, but I have performed on saxophones, clarinets, flutes, bassoon, oboe, and piano. I studied all of those instruments at the college level. I minored in music theory and math and am extremely comfortable incorporating music theory and composition into my music lessons. In mathematics, I have studied through senior undergraduate level Partial Differential Equations and Complex Analysis. I have also taken many advanced undergraduate courses in physics and engineering.

For math and physics, I charge $18 per 30 minute session and $25 for one hour. Music lessons become much more involved and require more materials, so I charge $25 per half hour session and $45 for a full hour. Both are assuming that the student does one session per week. Speak with me for further details involving multiple siblings within a family or more than one lesson per week. I can certainly apply discounts to that rate under those circumstances!
