Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I discuss with the parent and student what the perceived needs are. Then I ask the student to show me some of their work. In the case of a student learning remotely, I review with the student their lesson(s) of the week, and provide assistance as needed. I will also provide tips for organization/consistency of thoughts. Under no circumstances will I assist a student on a quiz or a test.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I taught high school mathematics for 20 years at a suburban Chicago school. I have 25+ years of experience editing and testing on-line mathematics software (high school through college level).
I have a BS in Biology, a BA in Mathematics, and an MA in Teaching.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I negotiate price based on course level and take into consideration family requirements.
How did you get started teaching?
I was unfulfilled in a corporate setting and felt that teaching could better mesh with my desire to help children.
What types of students have you worked with?
Middle school, high school, and college students, including neurodivergent students.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I love to visit holiday light displays. A favorite is in LaSalle, Illinois. It is quirky, but fun to visit year after year. It's lovely to think our financial contribution helps the Rotary support that community.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
There are tons of teachers to choose from. Find one whose teaching style meshes with your learning style. And once you find one, don't be afraid to ask them to explain things a different way.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Ask how they would conduct a session with you.
