About this tutor

I am the author of a critically-acclaimed novel and have worked on-staff at three magazines: Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, and InStyle so I can help writers of all ages craft their best pieces--both fiction and nonfiction. I also worked for the Brown University Admissions Office after I graduated where I interviewed over 400 high school seniors for admission consideration so I'm skilled at writing/editing college essays for top-notch institutions.

I love the whole writing process and helping others find their unique voices. I've seen the first drafts of work by some of the world's greatest writers and watched their work progress through further drafts and the input by experienced editors. Successful writing is equal parts composing and revising which should be comforting to all writers--you always have the ability to improve.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I like to get a sense of the student's writing style and have them email me a sample or two of an essay or short story they've done before I first meet with them. If they have a particular piece they are working on, they can send me that too, even if it is in very rough form. I will walk them through each draft as an editor would--describing ways to expand certain characters or scenes, how to adjust POV or tone, and re-ordering sequences.

If they are focusing on nonfiction or a college essay, I'll have them make a list of key points they want to get across and then we can discuss the focus of a first draft which they can work on after an intial session.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I majored in creative writing at Brown where I wrote and was an editor at their magazine, Issues; I've worked at major magazines and two publishing houses, and have edited many different types of writing. My first novel was published by Houghon Mifflin Harcourt and a second is on its way. I am also at work on a play for the New York writer's workshop.

I have worked with numerous high school and college students on their essays for university and graduate school applications.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

I charge $50 per hour which also includes reading the student's work between sessions and sending feedback.

How did you get started teaching?

I started helping other writers all the way back at Brown when I worked with the contributers to the magazine. A number of them hired me to help them with college assignments and eassays for grad school applications.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with everyone from middle school students to professional writers.
