About this tutor

I'm a credentialed teacher who has taught elementary, middle, and high school. I graduated with an undergraduate degree in literature and teaching, and I have Master of Arts in Teaching. I've worked in a writing lab, and just finished up an added credential to be a reading coach. I love teaching reading and writing skills, since reading a great book and writing are two of my favorite hobbies.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

When I first begin working with a student, I take time to get to know their strengths, needs, and interests. I have a set of quick assessments that I give to measure where they are academically in reading and/or writing. I also like to talk with the student to see what their likes, dislikes, goals, and dreams are. It is important for me to know what they would like to accomplish through tutoring.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I'm a credentialed teacher, and I have taught elementary, middle, and high school students. Currently, I teach at the elementary level. When completing my undergraduate degree in literature and teaching, I worked in a writing lab where I assisted underclassmen with writing a variety of different types of college level essays and papers. I recently completed a reading specialization credential, which allows me to work as a reading coach.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

I charge $20.00 for 30 minutes and $40.00 for 1 hour.

How did you get started teaching?

I actually fell in love with teaching when I was working in the writing lab at my alma mater. As I worked with students to improve their writing skills, I discovered that it brought me a great deal of joy to see others succeed at something I also loved to do: write! Since then, it's been a wonderful adventure, but I still love seeing my students' eyes light up when they understand something for the first time or when they're able to help themselves overcome a challenge.

What types of students have you worked with?

Currently, I work with 4th and 5th grade students. I have experience with special needs students, as well as elementary, middle, and high school students.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

The last day of school, we had a soccer tournament for the 5th grade students. It was so much fun to cheer them on while they showed off their non-academic talents.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a tutor in your area of expertise?

When you're looking for a tutor, make sure you know what you are looking to achieve during the tutoring sessions. Do you want to become a stronger writer? Do you want to read and understand difficult texts? Are you looking to push yourself creatively? When you know what you want to achieve, you can talk with your tutor and set some goals for yourself. Then, your tutor can shape the instruction to help you get where you want to go!

What questions should students think through before talking to tutors about their needs?

What do I want to achieve through tutoring? What are my strengths? What are some areas where I want to grow?
