About
Hello! My name is Sara Opitz! I Predomently tutor in Math (Elementary Math to College Algebra) and Physics.
I have been a private tutor for the last 6 years and have taught High School and Middle School Math and science for the last 10 years. I have my bachelor's in Physics and my Master of Arts in Secondary Education with a Specialization in STEM Education.
When helping my students, I use a scaffolded hand-off method; essentially, it is a three-step method. First, I will work through a problem and share how to approach the problem. Then, we will work through a similar problem together; I will ask guided questions while we solve the problem to help the student gain confidence in the process. Lastly, I will provide a few more problems for the student to try independently. Once the student believes they have found an answer, I will ask them to talk through how they solve the problem at hand.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First and foremost with a new student, I ask for mutual respect and dedication. As I try and help a student be successful, I need them to understand that I will not be doing their work for them; they need to work a solution out with me. I will be asking questions and guiding them along the way to a solution!
Secondly, I ask that students are upfront in their areas of difficulty. If the student is struggling in a subject, don't hide that from me. That will just make our tutoring session more difficult and frustrating for that student. For example, if a student is requesting physics tutoring, and they failed Algebra 1 or 2, I need to know that to better assist them.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I received my Bachelor of Arts in Physics from McDaniel College and my Masters of Arts in Secondary Education (6-12) with a specialization in STEM Education.
I have also been a Physics Teacher at a Public High School in Avondale, Arizona for the past 4 years. I currently teach STEAM, Physics, Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 in Prescott, Arizona.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Rates are variable to change due to students' requests.
The average rate is $40/ hour.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with many different types of students from every possible walk of life! I have students who have jobs or take care of family members after school; there is very little time for homework. With that, I make my lessons and tutoring sessions effective and goal-focused.
As I teach physics, it is very common for me to tutor in mathematics. My students have had poor foundational skills in math before getting to my classroom. I have tutored Algebra 1 & 2, and College Algebra to get them to pass Physics.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a tutor that will challenge you to think critically about the material you are studying. If they simply solve the problem for you, have you really learned anything? It's great for that one homework assignment, but who is going to take your next test or exam? Not the tutor! YOU, the student, will be!
If you hire me, I will help you understand the concept so that you can be successful without me. A good tutor should not be needed forever!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
"I don't understand!", is not enough for a teacher to actually help you! Before you ask for help, ask yourself the following questions:
"Where do I understand this concept?
"What steps do I know to solve a problem?"
Then you can more effectively state where you do not know how to proceed with the solution.
