Ashley Vaughan S. says, "Colleen has been the best addition to my son’s academic year! My 7th grader fell behind in math last year and with Colleen’s assistance, he is working at a higher grade level! From a parent’s perspective, Colleen is a fantastic communicator from providing a weekly progress report to scheduling! She uses a variety of approaches to help a student to be successful. Colleen’s resume is nothing short of amazing and I feel quite lucky to have the opportunity to work with her! From a student’s perspective, my son shared that Colleen is very patient and understanding which takes away the pressure to figure things out right away. He also said Colleen works at the student’s pace. We did not hesitate to sign up to work with her next year!" Read more

As a senior at the University of Phoenix graduating this upcoming spring, I bring both academic knowledge and five years of hands-on experience working with students as a Special Education Paraprofessional. During that time, I’ve supported students with a wide range of learning needs and abilities, helping them build confidence while reaching their academic goals. I believe every student learns differently, so I take the time to get to know each individual and adapt my teaching style to fit their unique needs and goals. Whether your child needs quick, focused help with an assignment or step-by-step instruction to develop a deeper understandi

I grew up with a passion for reading books from my Mother. I grew up reading books by Dr. Seuss! I help students realize the value of being able to read, especially in the world we live in today. Reading is not a skill you will master overnite. However, if you commit to doing the work daily, you will see the results! Will you get frustrated at times? Yes! Will you feel like giving up? Yes, that is just part of the learning process. However, I tell all of my students: NEVER GIVE UP!!!!

As a licensed teacher with four years of classroom experience and a current master’s student in Autism Spectrum Disorder, I have worked with students across a variety of grade levels and learning needs. I believe every child learns differently, so I take the time to get to know each student’s strengths, challenges, and personal goals. My tutoring sessions are tailored to each learner, whether they need help building foundational skills, staying organized, or gaining confidence in the classroom. Currently I am a sophmore at South Milwaukee High School, but I have worked to help tutor people struggling in algebra, geometry, and biology. I have worked with a variety of students from grades 3-12, and have helped adults who are looking to get their GED. I've also had experience working with special needs students, or students with certain learning disabilities. My goal is to help people understand what they are struggling with, and to help them find methods that work best for them.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Tutors.

What is special education tutoring?

Special education tutors help students with mild to severe cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities. Special needs tutors modify the general education curriculum to meet the child's individual needs and involve themselves in each student's social and behavioral development.

What is disability in special education?

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) identifies 13 disability categories where special education should be provided.

  • Auditory Impairment (AI) – refers to a hearing loss not categorized by deafness.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – mainly affects a child's social and communication skills and behavior.
  • Deafness – covers kids who can't hear most or all sounds, even with a hearing aid.
  • Deaf-Blindness (DB) – covers kids with both severe hearing and vision loss that requires unique programs.
  • Emotional Disturbance (ED) – various mental health issues such as anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and depression.
  • Intellectual Disability (ID) – covers disabilities such as below-average intellectual abilities, poor communication or social skills, and poor self care. One example is down syndrome.
  • Multiple Impairments (MI) – a child with multiple disabilities in this list.
  • Orthopedic Impairment (OI) – covers impairments in kids who lack function or ability in their bodies, such as cerebral palsy.
  • Other Health Impairment (OHI) – conditions that limit a child's strength, energy, or alertness such as ADHD.
  • Specific learning disability (SLD) – conditions such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, auditory processing disorder, or nonverbal learning disability.
  • Speech or Language Impairment (SI) – covers difficulties such as stuttering, pronouncing words, making sounds with the voice, or understanding words.
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) – injury to the brain caused by a physical force.
  • Visual Impairment / Blindness (VI) – covers both partial sight and blindness.

Japjeev is the first tutor that my son went to, she was a catalyst in motivating him in becoming independent at "try first and then ask for help". She connected well with him and helped him with his after school homework assignments as well as critiquing his writings. I highly recommend her to 7th grade Math students who need help in their daily school assignments.

I love YOUnique Minds. Sign up process was very easy. Pleasant director, she answer all my questions. Tutoring has been going well. Tutor has been very patient. We have done virtual, face to face and group. She has been engaged and loved all of them. She looks forward to each class. I also love that one of her tutors sends me a report of what they did and where she should focus her time next session. Overall I am pleased.
