About this tutor

Having experience as a classroom teacher gives me an advantage over other tutors when helping students prepare for exams because I know not just the content but also the curriculum. I can make educated guesses as to what a student's test is going to look like, what content will be emphasized, and the format in which questions will be presented. This helps me to make the most of my time with my students when I'm tutoring.

I enjoy working with students of all ages. Students who overcome challenges they face in math will gain confidence to overcome other challenges they face outside of academics.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I will let the student decide if they want to start attacking specific problems or if they want to learn a particular concept or understand a new formula. Regardless, I will watch the student write/talk and get a feel for how they do math. The end goal for any student is to solve problems proficiently, but how much of the time is spent showing them my work versus observing theirs will depend on the individual student.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have eight years of experience as a tutor and five years of experience as a classroom teacher. In the classroom I taught grades 5-12 and as a tutor I have taught elementary through college and post-college. I have won and placed highly in many math competitions growing up.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

$50 per hour

How did you get started teaching?

I did some tutoring in high school, but it was in college when I began to tutoring everday and it became my primary source of income. I became a classroom teacher for five years but I am now focusing only on tutoring.

What types of students have you worked with?

As a tutor I have worked with elementary students through college and post-college (GRE test prep). As a classroom teacher I taught grades 5-12.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I recently helped a good friend pass a standardized test they had previously failed multiple times. This allowed them to go to graduate school.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

You cannot know if a tutor is going to be good unless they tutor you. Looking at experience level is a good idea, but you should also just pick someone who you think you would probably be comfortable to work with.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

Students can help their tutors by being able to articulate how they approach math and what their struggles are. Do you use calculators or do you work by hand? Do you show your work or do you work problems in your head? A good tutor will ask these questions, but you should know the answers to them.
