About this tutor

I have over 15 years of tutoring experience.  I've been focused on working with middle school to college level students in Mathematics.

I love working with students one-on-one.

I frequently get a student that hates math.  After tutoring, math becomes one of their favorite subjects.

Another one of my favorite feelings is when a student texts me after taking a test or when they get their test score showing me their awesome grade!

Jeanell's positivity and encouragement helped both my daughter and son go from struggling in their very competitive math classes, to having confidence and being able to excel. Jeanell knows how to encourage, but also challenge my kids to try to do better in their classes and get better scores on their homework and tests. She was able to explain advanced math topics from different angles and approaches so my daughter, who didn't think she was able to really understand math, felt confident in approaching difficult topics that she was afraid to even attempt. Knowing that they could meet with Jeanell each week was such a relief for all of us. We are so thankful that we found Jeanell so my kids could get through very tough classes!

Jeanell tutored me for about 2 years. She was always incredibly helpful and prepared. We worked both within and outside my textbook, which always enhanced my learning and wouldn't have been possible without all the resources Jeanell put together for me. She always managed to adapt to my needs and learning styles, which was something my teachers weren't always able to do. Her help over those years was invaluable!

Before hiring Jeanell our weekends were consumed with a frustrated teenager and her father getting angry and upset about math homework. Jeanell came highly recommended and we couldn’t have been any happier with the results. She helped with both of our teenagers and the results were immediate. Jeanell was very knowledgeable about the course material and even knew the teachers and how they worked. She helped the kids with homework questions and prepared them for their tests. Our children succeeded with her help and both managed to get A’s in their math classes. We got our weekends back and Jeanell was priceless to our family!!! I highly recommend her

Jeanell worked with my daughter from 8th grade through 11th grade (geometry to AP Calc AB). She was very accessible and knowledgeable, and more than willing to answer questions throughout the week. She helped make some difficult concepts understandable and now my daughter, a senior, will be a math major at UC Berkeley.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Math is usually taught in a way where the teacher is talking at the student.  The student may or may not be engaged.  It is essential for learning to have the student engaged in the learning.  When I tutor a student, we spend time not only working problems on paper but talking about the problems aloud.  I'm constantly asking questions like, "Why do you think it is that way?"  This way the student isn't memorizing but understanding the concepts.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a degree in Physics and Mathematics.  Many years ago, I worked for Lockheed Martin, NASA, and BMC Software in various engineering/scientific roles. In the last 16 years, I found my love of teaching and have been running my own tutoring business in El Dorado Hills, California for 16 years.

In 2019, I moved to Vacaville California, leaving behind my clientele.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

Middle School Math through High School Math: $40 per hour

College Math (Calculus and higher): $50 per hour

How did you get started teaching?

After moving from the San Jose area in 2003, I started doing some substitute teaching.  The math department from all of the local high schools wanted to hire me, however, I had small children so I wasn't interested in full time work.  The math department heads at Folsom High School convinced me to start my own math tutoring business.  The rest is history!

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with struggling students and gifted students.  Many believe that tutoring is only for the struggling student, however, that isn't always the case.  I have had many gifted students that want to have the extra practice so they can be more confident in getting an A.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

My most recent event that I am fond of is finding out that two of my former students will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

If you are meeting in person, make sure your tutor doesn't have bad breath.  I always bring gum. :)
