About this tutor

Top for me: Learning, writing, laughing, joy.  For the last 6 years I worked as Director of Operations at Circles & Ciphers: a hip-hop infused restorative justice organization that educated young people who were impacted by violence.   I created and taught course content, managed programs, and facilitated our national consultancy which rendered services to Harvard, Yale, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art!  All of the above centered on creative writing!

I graduated from Wesleyan University in 2013 (4.0 GPA), majored in Sociology, recieved a Certificate in Education, and completed the pre-med track.  I simultaneous toured the country, competing in National spoken word compeitions. Excited to help folks get excited about learning and creating.

Helping someone to find life and excitement in writing a song, poem, essay? In reading the Bible? Simply the best feeling.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I'd love to set up a call to talk through what exactly the student needs and wants.  From there, I can share more about who I am and the skills I offer.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I received a Certificate in Education from Wesleyan University in Connecticut.  As an undergrad, I developed and implimented creative writing curriculum that explored social justice issues through modern day poetry & pros.

I served as a Senior Interviewer for Wesleyan's admissions, interviewing high school students applying to the school.

Upon graduation, I worked full time creating course content for the music therapy department of a local juvenile detention center.  I then recieved a grant from the Patricelli Center for Social Entrepeneurship to move to Chicago and work for Circles & Ciphers.  Circles & Ciphers is a restorative justice organization led by and for young people impacted by violence.  I began as their first full time employee and left managing a team of 11, coordinating a national consultancy which rendered services to Harvard and Yale, and having octoopled the organizations budget.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

I utilize a sliding scale and am excited to work this out with each client.

How did you get started teaching?

I began at age 14, working as a summer employee at Turn 2 Us, an educational organization founded by Derek Jeter that seeks to support elementary school students in Washington Heights battling mental health problems.

From there I fell in love with supporting the growth and engagement of young people!

What types of students have you worked with?

- 5 years with elementary school students
(Turn 2 Us, NYC)

- 3 years with middle school students
(Green Street Art Center, CT)

- 6 years with young adults, aged 14-24yo (Circles & Ciphers, IL)

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

Leaving Circles & Ciphers, the organization I had help lead for 6 years, took a new type of courage.  It took patience, as the executive director and I trained a team of young people to fill my role.  It took faith, as I left to a new city (Los Angeles) where I had never lived and knew few people.  It took a relationship with God, who calmed my heart through it all.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Whether hiring a teacher for Bible studies or a song writing, of core importance is how you feel when in their presense.  Do you feel excited, light hearted? Are you laughing and seeing things in new ways?  Is the teacher able to listen to make you feel happy about who you are? Because you are incredible.

So if your gut says "no" to any of those questions, then go ahead and find a new teacher! Both song writing & understanding the Bible are fruit that bud from a happy heart! Trust your heart :)

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

What do you want most to get out of this?

What are questions you want more room in your life explore?

What is something that would bore you about this experience? (lets avoid that at all costs!)
