About

Biology and conservation are two of my greatest passions, as they explain the world we live in and the opportunities we have to innovate and excite. As a child, I moved all around the United States, and because there are different learning requirements for each state, starting from 6th grade, I took biology every single year until I graduated High School. Initially, this made me hate biology, because I had been told that the mitochondria was the powerhouse of the cell about a million times.

Fortunately, after taking International Baccalaureate Biology, I realized how exciting it was for me to synthesize all the information I had learned, from the lipids in a cell membrane to the trophic relationships of complex ecosystems. Now, I study Marine Biology at the University of Washington and work every day towards my dream of exploring and studying the vast oceans on our planet.

As a scholar in this field, I have practiced many different ways of studying and understanding the material. I know how to appeal to a variety of learning styles, and hope that my own excitement of the subject is adopted by my students. In addition, my experience with the International Baccalaureate program in high school has made me profficient in the structure and learning goals of both the course material and the exams held at the end of the program. Though I specialize in IB, I can also assist in tutoring for AP, as well as the Biology SAT.

Helping my students understand a topic for the first time or celebrating with them on their success in class is incredibly rewarding. I want to facilitate a love for science in my students and help them find and maintain confidence in their academics.

Florence has done and continue to do, an exceptional job. Her style is very engaging and my Son states he has learned more from Florence in a few weeks than a whole semester with his on line Biology Teacher. Highly recommend.

Frequently asked questions

If tutoring is needed for a specific course, I will review their syllabus to get a feel for the topics at hand. It is also helpful for me to review any classwork or past exams to understand what my student is struggling with. Depending on the specific needs of my students I will provide some/all of the following:

- Break downs of the material and how different units connect.

- Visuals such as drawings/diagrams of the material for better understanding, pictures, and videos.

- Homework help.

- Exam study prep and methods.

- Practice problems/tests to gauge how the student is progressing and post-completion break downs of each problem.

- Planning of study and homework schedules outside of my own tutoring for supplementation.

As a current college student, I understand the difficulty of time management and seemingly impossible work loads. I will work with my students to manage these obstacles and give them the peace of mind that they have the ability to succeed. I believe that wellness should be prioritized, and hope to lower my student's stress levels as much as possible.

High school graduate with experience in IB Biology and the Biology SAT prep.

Current student of the University of Washington majoring in marine biology.

Standard high school Biology tutoring: $20-$30 per hour depending on course material.

Biology SAT prep: $30 per hour.

+$5 per hour if tutoring is in person.

I am willing to negotiate on pricing if needed as I believe education is incredibly important.

In high school I would lead study sessions for my classmates, and worked with lower classmen on introductory biology.

Mostly peers and younger individuals.

I recently started selling biodegradable stickers to raise money for the Coral Restoration Foundation and was able to sell out in the first day! Which was very rewarding!

Be proactive and understand that I can only help you as much as you want to be helped. The realm of biology is like one big puzzle, and once you work towards and learn to connect the pieces, it is indeed a very beautiful picture.

I think the most important first step is feeling good about advocating for one's self.

The most important questions in my opinion are:

What parts do I enjoy and am good at? How might my previous understanding of these topics assist in my future understanding?

What have been the most effective exercises for my learning?

What are the most important topics that I am still missing? What do I know about them so far?

What is my largest goal for this class? What might be some smaller goals to work towards that goal?

What methods have not worked for me? What do I struggle to get motivation for?
