About

I am a retired CCISD chemistry teacher (pre-AP and on-level). I am currently working part-time in CCISD tutoring science and math. I also tutor high school and college chemistry in the evenings and on weekends.

I am familiar with all of the common mistakes and misconceptions that students have when they are learning chemistry. I have many resources at my fingertips (electronic and on paper) to quiz students and make sure that they master a topic. The key to getting an A in chemistry is to do as many problems as possible for depth of understanding. My specialty is to help you master your assignments and then to provide you with "practice quizzes and tests" to help you prepare for your exams. The best news is that I can do all of this remotely using the white board feature in Zoom!

My degree is in chemical engineering with a masters in environmental management. My careers have been: chemical engineer, environmental engineer, stay at home mom/volunteer, theater teacher, chemistry teacher, and now a chemistry tutor!

I have 3 adult children in college who are all STEM majors with a love of science and math. I also have a 11th grader who also excels in science and math.

I have always loved chemistry! In college, I always had to study for my tests early since friends would show up at my dorm the night before the tests for help. Later, the university employeed me as a chemistry tutor.

I love to use my theater/music background to help students learn through song (periodic table song, electron configuration song, etc.). I love to help students see how important chemistry is to everyday life and to describe how I used stoichiometry in my chemical engineering career.

I like how she takes the time to make sure her students understand the concepts and she is very flexible.

Mrs. S always prepares the material in advance. If the student has a specific topic/area requiring attention, she wants to know prior to the session. This is unique about Mrs. S bc she truly cares and wants the tutor session to be efficient and helpful. I highly recommend Mrs. S who has been a Chemistry teacher in High school for many years, who has a lot of experience how to help students to understand the subject.

It was quite refreshing to have Ms. Ruth help me with Chemistry II, especially taken online and in a condensed 5 week semester. I was able to bounce back ideas and figure out my errors during my sessions with her. I was able to bring my average back up to an A after hovering by a B- for the first two weeks.

Ruth is very friendly and personable and works hard to support my son with his Chemistry. She goes above and beyond to prepare manipulatives and foldables that he can keep to help on future assignments. She was flexible with her time as well to accommodate our ridiculous schedule.

    Frequently asked questions

I always provide the first session free!  I want to let the student get a chance to see if he/she thinks that we will work well together and to determine if I can meet their needs.

Depending on the time of the school year, I sometimes prepare a diagnostic evaluation to determine baseline knowledge about chemistry and to determine if there are any gaps.

I typically ask students to provide me copies of their assignments in advance.  This allows me to work through the solutions prior.  When we meet, we can compare answers and save time (and money)! Then, we can quickly focus on the misconceptions and errors and have plenty of time to correct them and get you back on track.  NEW: During the pandemic, I have been using Zoom to tutor students remotely.  I use the white board feature and the "share document" feature to show all the steps in solving complicated chemistry problems such as kinetics and acid/base titrations.
