Carolyn G. says, "Zand is honestly the best tutor I’ve worked with. He explains things in a way that actually makes sense, and he’s super patient even when I’m totally lost. I never felt judged or rushed, which made it way easier to ask questions. My grades definitely improved, but more than that, I just feel more confident now. Highly recommend!" Read more

Shamith S. says, "Miss. Mei has been working with us for some weeks now, and Im already seeing big positive changes in my child and I requested her if I could leave her a review. Miss. Mei’s way of interacting with kids, her preparations for every class, her ongoing discussions with parents and her background being an experienced DOE teacher were some of the things that I really liked. She has great strategies. We work together as a team. My child loves her classes and always looks forward to it. Ms. Mei is very encouraging and has a positive outlook. She is sensitive to the overall needs of a child and plans her lessons accordingly. She even took the initiative of collaborating with the school teachers for maximal outcome. I’m very glad that I got in touch with Ms. Mei. I was looking for tutors online and feel very lucky to have found her. A Right teacher at the right time. My best wishes to Miss. Mei." Read more

Not only is she an exceptional writer herself, but she has an incredible ability to connect with pre-teens and teenagers, understanding their unique personalities and motivating them to reach their full potential. She provided thoughtful, challenging reading and writing instruction tailored to each of my children, inspiring them to read more and continuously improve their writing. In addition, her kindness, dependability, and flexibility, made her the best tutor we could have worked with over the last few years." Read more

Miles can be a little difficult to keep on track, but Rachel was always able to keep him engaged with the activities. He even raised his reading growth 4 levels in a matter of a few months! There aren’t enough great things we can say about her and Themba Tutors. Thank you so much for having Rachel be a part of Miles’ educational journey. She will be missed. -Nate and Stefania" Read more

Hello! I currently work as an Academic Dean of Special Education and English as a New Language at a middle school, but my background is primarily in K-5 education. I am a former first grade teacher and literacy coach, and am formally trained in the Science of Reading. I have experience creating special education programs for students with print-based disabilities, and in delivering phonics and morphology lessons for children with dyslexia. I have tutored students with dyslexia and struggling readers for over ten years. I love teaching children how to read and write!

Your special needs tutoring questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Tutors.

What is special education tutoring?

Special education tutors help students with mild to severe cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities. Special needs tutors modify the general education curriculum to meet the child's individual needs and involve themselves in each student's social and behavioral development.

What is disability in special education?

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) identifies 13 disability categories where special education should be provided.

  • Auditory Impairment (AI) – refers to a hearing loss not categorized by deafness.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – mainly affects a child's social and communication skills and behavior.
  • Deafness – covers kids who can't hear most or all sounds, even with a hearing aid.
  • Deaf-Blindness (DB) – covers kids with both severe hearing and vision loss that requires unique programs.
  • Emotional Disturbance (ED) – various mental health issues such as anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and depression.
  • Intellectual Disability (ID) – covers disabilities such as below-average intellectual abilities, poor communication or social skills, and poor self care. One example is down syndrome.
  • Multiple Impairments (MI) – a child with multiple disabilities in this list.
  • Orthopedic Impairment (OI) – covers impairments in kids who lack function or ability in their bodies, such as cerebral palsy.
  • Other Health Impairment (OHI) – conditions that limit a child's strength, energy, or alertness such as ADHD.
  • Specific learning disability (SLD) – conditions such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, auditory processing disorder, or nonverbal learning disability.
  • Speech or Language Impairment (SI) – covers difficulties such as stuttering, pronouncing words, making sounds with the voice, or understanding words.
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) – injury to the brain caused by a physical force.
  • Visual Impairment / Blindness (VI) – covers both partial sight and blindness.

Zand transformed the way my child approaches learning. My son has struggled with math confidence for years, but after just a few sessions with Zand, things finally clicked. Zand broke down complex geometry and algebra concepts in a way my son could actually understand, and even made him excited to learn. His grades shot up from barely passing to solid B’s, and he’s aiming for A’s now! Zand is patient, encouraging, and truly invested in his students’ success. Couldn’t recommend him more!

Miles Smart tutoring is wonderful. They have a consultation to see what your need are and they match you with a tutor that they feel fits the student. They give multiple check-ins to see how you like the tutor, how things are going, and ask your opinions. They really listen. The Tutor Thomas Chicas and my son immediately had a great connection. Thomas was very patient and was such a great help with preparing for tests, exams, and homework. Thomas thoroughly gave detailed explanations when there were things that my son did not understand in Calculus and Physics. I am so glad I have such a good tutor for my son's next three years of college. I feel a sigh of relief now. Many students give up on school because they do not have the support they need. I went from getting multiple calls from my son being stressed out and defeated to now feeling confidant about his classes and looking forward to the next semesters. Miles Smart Tutoring is a lifesaver.
