I feel like I did a good job when I can see the connections that are being made, whether it be from a formula to practicing an equation correctly, to realizing a theme in book/article, to connecting historical events over time!
I enjoy seeing students achieve that "aha" moment, that look of pride in their eyes. When they're on track or right on point with our area of concern and are that much closer to being able to work independent of my assistance.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Have a short first meeting where we identify our areas of concern, I can do some background research about student interests to better make connections.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelor's degree in social-political science and have taught social studies for two years.
How did you get started teaching?
I got started in education being a Mathematics RtI instructor (helping with grades 5-8) while also being a teacher's aide in a 7th grade Mathematics class and in a 5th grade Language Arts class. I substituted informally for a year, and have now taught 6th grade Writing and Literature, 7th grade Life Science, and 7th grade Social Studies.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with early childhood up to 8th grade, with an emphasis in upper elementary and middle school children. As a previous detention supervisor, I also have experience with students who struggle with impulse control, emotional regulation, and avoidance behaviors.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Well, I would suggest narrowing down what's most confusing to you about the subject you're struggling in. Is it hard to remember the names and places? Is it hard to remember what events came before another? Is it hard to understand and analyze documents? And if it's all hard, rank what is giving you the most trouble so we can attack the "worst" to get the biggest impact, sooner!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Two major questions at the top of my noggin:
1. What happens if I get frustrated and want to stop/quit?
2. What supplies will I need?
