About

I have extensive experience tutoring math and science. Along with strong background in science and math, I have been teaching and tutoring for more than 15 years. I have worked with students on arithmetic, algebra, pre-calculus, geometry, trigonometry, AP Calculus, Calculus 1, 2, and 3, and AP Physics for high school and college. I have worked with students of different background and abilities, for remedial as well as advanced students. I emphasize the pedagogic aspects of teaching and learning. One of the satisfying aspects of tutoring and guiding students has been to help them to discover problem solving for themselves. I like to establish long term relationships with families and students towards successful careers. I have experience with technology for distance teaching. I use technology tools for communication (like Zoom combined with iPad and digital pencil.) I also use these tools as pedagogic resources for research to create a rich and engaging environment for instruction and tutoring.

Mr. Ghassemi is a very great tutor. In fact, I would say that he is better than my teacher at school. The main reason behind this is because he goes in depth with the lessons and gives numerous practice problems, both MCQ and FRQ for me [student] to understand. He also gives detailed solutions to each one and works with the student had they got it wrong or simply do not understand. When a student simply does not understand, he is extremely patient and listens to their ideas and provides an explanation if their ideas are correct, if they are wrong he makes sure to delve deeper into the concepts that are required for the optimal understanding of that problem. He also makes sure you understand the concptual reasoning behind each question. Mr. Ghassemi is definitely highly qualified in both Maths and Physics. He spends a lot of time on his own apart from the one on one student session to work each problem out before hand and sometimes even provides multiple approaches or solutions regarding how to solve the questions. He helps with both preparing for the AP Exams as well as preparing for unit tests and homework given by the school. I would definitely recommend Mr. Ghassemi to anyone requiring a high quality tutor that gives high quality services!

The tutor works at the level of the kid. He goes above and beyond to make sure the child understands the concepts so that they are able to solve anything put in front of them. He spends time to prepare according to the needs of the child. He is very kind and encouraging and really a wonderful tutor. My child calls him GOATT: greatest of all time tutor

Mr. Ghassemi taught my son Middle School Math for a couple of years. He was knowledgeable and patient in working with him. He provided the support he needed while also encouraging him to become independent in his thinking. He communicated my sons progress with me regularly and accepted my feedback to help my son navigate the complexity of several Math concepts. I would recommend him highly.

    Frequently asked questions

My interaction with new students typically begins with a pre-arranged call with the parents. I introduce myself and walk through any questions they might have. I briefly explain my approach to teaching and learning, offering a half an hour free sit down with the student. This gives the family, the student, and myself an opportunity to understand the situation and evaluate the student’s needs. In that time, I look for gaps in knowledge and evaluate the level of materials being taught at their school. I explain importance of keeping the family abreast of our progress. I emphasize my belief that while explaining concepts and solving problems is essential, my central goal is to give the students an opportunity to discover for themselves.
I have advanced degrees in mathematical sciences and engineering. I have taught physics at the college level. I have tutored dozens of students at various levels of mathematics and physics. I am proud to have worked with families for multiple years.
For middle school students, I have a base hour rate. With more advanced levels and specific types of courses, I may charge a different rate. I am flexible in offering a better hourly rate for multiple students in the family or for sessions longer than an hour.
I started teaching as a teaching assistant in graduate school. After obtaining a Master of Science from Durham University (U.K.) in mathematical physics, taught physics at the University of Tabriz in Iran. I followed that by working in a state-owned educational company where I was responsible to develop programs for educational equipment and relevant teacher training. Since moving to the United States several decades ago, I obtained a graduate degree in engineering and worked in the energy industry. After retirement, I decided to apply my knowledge and experience in teaching math and science with the goal of helping students.
I have worked mostly with middle school, high school, and college students. This has ranged across students with developmental difficulties to students who strive to go above and beyond their core curriculum. I have mostly tutored math (including test preparation), and physics. This includes courses such as Honors Algebra 2, AP Calculus, and AP physics. At the moment, I am working with two students in pre-calculus, one student in geometry, a college student with differential equations and calculus 3, and a high school student in physics.
The introduction of technologies such as screen sharing through an iPad on zoom has led to several fond experiences with students during the pandemic. In one online session, I was walking through a physics problem that is best understood through a chalk board. The student was surely frustrated with tackling these questions through standard lecturing. Being able to sketch on my iPad the necessary graphs and diagrams while sharing control with the student unlocked a deeper connection, and was quite memorable.
My advice is to request a demonstration to better understand teaching style. Before the session, try to review your problems, making a reasonable attempt to solve them yourself. During that session, make sure to ask questions which you could not answer yourself to really drill into the areas of focus.
More than half of the solution for a problem is truly understanding the question. Drill into the meaning of the question, don’t simply skip to the answer. Next comes reasoning. Always ask why!
