About

I am a private educator, experienced in homeschooling gifted students and tutoring students with learning disabilities, including dyslexia and ADHD. As a tutor, I seek to develop an open and trusting relationship with my students to create a friendly environment where learning can take place. I believe every student can grow and improve. My teaching method involves finding my students' learning styles, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. For phonics and reading instruction, I utilize both Lindamood-Bell and Orton Gillingham techniques. As a writing tutor, I focus on establishing pre-writing and organizational skills to help make the writing process easier. My students make an interactive notebook of writing activities that also serves as a reference book for future writing assignments. For math, I help students build and strengthen foundational skills, such as place value, base ten number system, and math facts, in order to be able to grow in mathematical understanding.

Kirsten is very knowledgeable and applies proven strategies with fidelity. She is a very conscientious worker who makes a connection with each child she works with. Students immediately feel comfortable and are eager to learn with her at the helm. She has a love for great literature that she enjoys sharing with others. She is reliable and a joy to work with. I would highly recommend her for any position.

Frequently asked questions

On my first visit with a new student, I like to play a get-to-know-you game to break the ice. I also like to ask my students what they hope to learn in tutoring and what they like best in and out of school. Once they are comfortable, I will assess their current levels of understanding in the subject I'm tutoring and see where their strengths and weaknesses are.

I have a B.A in English: Creative Writing. I have been trained and certified in the Lindamood-Bell instructional methods for phonics, spelling, and reading comprehension.

I am also experienced in teaching children with dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning challenges, as well as gifted students.

I generally charge $50 per hour, with added travel expense if the distance is out of my normal range.

I started teaching and homeschooling my own children. After writing stories for children and helping my children find their way through college and beyond, I decided to return to work in the school system.

I have mainly worked with both elementary and middle school students. My students range from strong readers and writers to those with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, anxiety, and more. I find that they all have strengths and room to grow.

I am fond of recently witnessing one of my students exclaim, "I can't wait to read more to find out what happens next! I've never wanted to read a book until now."

I would advise a student looking for a tutor to find someone they feel can help them reach their full potential.

Students should think about what they hope to achieve through tutoring and how they think they can improve.
