About this tutor

Hello,

I am a personal tutor willing to not only teach your child / children but also to guide them through college applications. I would like to be a friend of your child / children and your family to create love for a subject and encourage success.

I am a recently married PhD student at Stanford studying Environmental Organic Chemistry and I am looking to make a connection with one family that I can provide services for. I am searching for you as you are searching for me!

Please see my LinkedIn account where I have a copy of my curriculum vitae: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I would need to understand the structure of their class and how the information is taught to them. Then I would delve into their assignments and try to guage how they approach problems to be solved. After this point I can get a sense of their understanding of the subject and I will try to create lesson plans for them to catch up if needed or work ahead of the class if possible.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am currently a PhD student at Stanford in the Environmental Engineering and Science Department. I study Environmental Organic Chemistry focusing on food disinfection byproducts.

I have won a National Science Foundation Grduate Research Fellowship based on my proposal for quantifying chlorinated compounds within disinfected oods for ready-to-eat purposes. This should demonstrate my qualification to teach Chemistry as I not only study Chemistry in my research, but I can also apply my knowledge for useful research.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

I am able to negotiate.

How did you get started teaching?

I decided to tutor so that I could provide a bit more for my new family.

What types of students have you worked with?

I am new to tutoring, but I have helped students strategize for applying to college and graduate school.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I am fond of my work with undergraduate students. I wrote an application guide to graduate school for students of my undergraduate institution at Carnegie Mellon University in the Chemical Engineering Department. Please see this document at the link provided below: https://www.cmu.edu/cheme/advising/Resources/graduate-school/adam-simpson.html

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

I would give them inspiration to reach their goals in life. My subject is only a portion of what they need to truly succeed, but inspiration and encouragement can take them even further!

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

Students need to be comfortable with testing themselves. Chemistry is a subject best taught through repitition. I can only clarify loopholes that the teacher missed in class, but the student needs to take responsibility to master the subject. This is the best practice for college where nobody is going to force them to hit the books.
