I've also coauthored two behavioral neuroscience studies during my three subsequent years of research experience, and I regularly guest-lecture for Intro to Sociology at Columbus State. I'm currently taking a break from academia and seeking the flexibility of tutoring before applying to PhD programs. As a researcher with ADHD, I understand the power of "semantic learning"— storytelling and connecting concepts to a student's personal interests is proven to deepen their understanding and memorization of the material. I'm also queer/disability-friendly and a first-gen college grad, so I

Your AP Tutoring questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Tutors.

How much do AP tutors cost?

Tutors charge $25 to $80 per hour for private, in-person lessons and $25 to $50 per hour for online lessons. Tutoring rates for SAT or AP test prep are $45 to $100 per hour on average, depending on the subject and the tutor's level of expertise.

How much do AP exams cost?

An AP exam costs $98 per exam for students in the U.S., Canada, or U.S. territories. In other countries, the cost of AP exams is $128. If you order the exam after the November 16th deadline, you'll have to pay a $40 late fee on top of the exam cost.

Some students may qualify for a fee reduction of up to $45 if their family income is under 185% of the federal poverty level. This means their exam will cost $53 for students in the U.S. or Canada. Other qualifying factors include:

  • They or their family receives public assistance.
  • They live in subsidized housing or foster care.
  • They are homeless, an orphan, or a ward of the state.
  • They participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), or the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) programs.

What is an AP exam?

An Advanced Placement (AP) exam is a test that covers one of 38 academic subjects, which students can take starting in 9th or 10th grade. Students who take AP courses in school and then take the corresponding exams can earn college credits while still in high school. To take the exam, you must register between May and November.

While you don’t have to take the exam after an AP course, you could get extra credit if you do. You can also send your scores on college applications, which can boost your chances of being accepted if you do well.

How long are AP exams?

AP exams typically last between 2 to 3 hours, including a 10-minute break between sections. The exam usually starts at either 8:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. for most subjects. You’re not allowed to leave the testing area even if you finish early, so make sure to use all the time they give you wisely. You may qualify for extra breaks if you have a disability.

When do AP exam scores come out?

AP scores usually come out two months after you take the exam, so during the beginning of July. Exact dates vary slightly depending on the year and whether you take the exam late. You can check your exam scores through the My AP account on the College Board website. The scores range from 1 to 5, and most universities require at least a 3 to award you college credits.

Can I retake an AP exam?

Yes, you can retake an AP exam as many times as you want. However, since the exams are only administered once per year, you’ll have to wait till the next year to retake it. To prevent failing the exam or getting a lower score than you want, make sure you hire a tutor or have a solid grasp on the course material.

Dani was great to work with. My 16-year-old son said, “ She was very helpful and I took a lot of her tips going into the test. I feel like I did much better than if I went in there as an inexperienced test taker”.
