About
I am a PhD student at the Medical College of Wisconsin studying biochemistry. I want to tutor because I love teaching! I plan to build a career teaching.
I bring very unique experiences to my students as a PhD student performing my own research on cancer. I have an excellent perspective on how science from many different fields come together, how research works, and how to utilize scientific thinking beyond just understanding basic concepts.
My students will learn how to learn. School is not just about memorizing facts and concepts, it is extremely important that students develop the skills that make them more effective learners. Not only will I teach them science, but I will help them understand what they need to do to tackle problems on their own. What questions they need to ask, where they can get resources, and how that will help them in the future.
I am in the final year of my doctorate degree, I have tutored graduate students, college students and high school students, but am comfortable tutoring any age group!
Along with experience tutoring 1 on 1, I have given many talks with a ride range of audiences. These range from work depicting my thesis work meant for trained scientists in the field, to a TEDX talk meant to simplify a complex topic to the general puplic (check it out in the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0pLIjQG1q0&t=17s).
Science can be difficult. It can be hard for students to visualize and grasp certain concepts, which causes students to get frustrated and struggle. I work hard to break down these concepts for my students using many different techniques with real world examples. It is important to be patient and encouraging! :)
There is nothing more rewarding than helping a student understand something they felt was over their head. I feel that anyone can understand complex science. It is just about breaking it down into enough tangible concepts and then bringing it all together.
Identifying what is causing a student to struggle is key. They may tell you that they "just don't get it", but in reality, there is usually something very specific that they don't get. Once you tackle that very specific concept, it all starts to come together.
I really enjoy watching a student gain confidence as we progress! They start to not fear science, and really believe that they can do it!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, I try to let the student get to know me. It is really important that I create an enviornment that allows the student to feel as comfortable as possible. This allows them to open up about what they know, and don't know. It helps them admit when they are confused, and don't understand something.
Next, I try to get as wide of a scope on their cirriculum as possible. It is very advantagous if I can know what was taught previously, and what is coming in the future. This allows me to see what concepts will be built on, or have been built on in the past.
I like to specifically point out these two pieces of information because they are very critical to first make sure I am a good fit for the student, and then I can effectively prepare to be as efficient and effective as possible!
